Toyota, Lexus owners warned about thefts that use 'relay attacks'

Security experts are warning owners of Toyota and Lexus vehicles not to rely on their automobile's anti-theft system following a rash of brazen thefts across the Ottawa region.

Since April, criminals have made off with more than 100 of the Japanese-brand vehicles from Petawawa to Casselman, Ont., many of them apparently destined for resale in Africa and the Middle East.

Toyota 4Runners, Highlanders, Tacoma pickup trucks and Lexus SUVs worth around $60,000 each are driven right out of their owners' driveways under cover of darkness, and the thieves never touch the keys. All are made by Toyota.

Remote start key fobs are the devil. They cause so many problems.

Very common issue as all remote devices can be hacked. Signals can be copied and vulnerabilities can be exploited. No way would they stop at hacking smart devices.

The technology on these Fobs are old. Even the few year old rides are easy to crack. Wait till they hack the driverless cars and play bumper cars. :[


The new rides you cant disconnect the theft and keyless entry as easy as a 3rd gen...

Mine is just heavy duty foil left over from my sandwich, i mean it works why waste or recycle it?

Valid point that we dont have fobs that are super smart. Ours are like garage door openers..

I think it's the keyless entry/ignition vehicles in general. If the car thinks someone is standing next to it with a valid key fob, it unlocks and is drivable. I guess for safety reasons, if the car then drives away from the fob that unlocked it, it keeps on going until shut off, so the driver doesn't get stuck in traffic shortly after they start if they dropped their key fob or left it on the roof and it fell off.

Here's a Tesla being stolen in the same manner. One guy walks over to the house with a wire, just to see if a fob is close enough inside the house. They get a hit, the Tesla unlocks, the accomplice gets in and engages drive, and at that point they can just keep on driving the car until they shut it off again.

Thats exactly correct JohnMc - then they have the code to build onto another blank fob, bingo complete automobile!

And yeah this only applies to "Smart" key entry mechanisms (where only proximity is needed to unlock/start auto).

So I'm glad I've got nothing but 'old school' fobs...

Any wireless signal can be copied. Frequently counters are quite easily obtained. I quit using the keyless entry while in public about 5 or more years ago. Because of these issues.

So sadly we are not immune. However, ours are not highly sought after because of their age.

Its time to put gps trackers in your vehicles if you live in highly populated areas. I live in extremely rural area but I do travel to the city and populated areas quite often.

I am going to put taggers in all my vehicles incase someone gets the bright idea to try to steal them.

People have lost all common sense..


Her smart phone is more dangerous to her life and identity then the key fobs. I also hate to break it to her that all the mfgs use the same or similar smart fobs.

Oh well. What can you do.
