Toyota/Lexus top the list, Jeep is last!

Will have to pass that on to my Jeep-driving friends!

This part makes me feel slightly better about the 5spd auto in my 2015:

Lexus and Toyota — which rely on older transmissions in many of their models — were the best-performing brands in the survey.

This isn't at all surprising...

The Europeans and some other brands have been having a small handful of issues with the "Bulletproof" (according to one article in Popular Mechanics I smirked at a while back) 7spd ZF transmissions they used in everything a few years back. Now they started shoving 8 & 9spd units in their vehicles and lo and be hold they start having issues...

Like I said before, a lot of times there's more gears than the vehicle knows what to do with and cramming that many gears in such a small package has led to a sharp downturn in reliability. Not that 7+ speed transmissions are inherently bad, it's just that apparently shoving in 2 or more extra gearsets into the same package is going to require better tuning from an engineering and software perspective. Jeep has been the most notorious with issues, their attempts at a 9spd unit in their vehicles has been most noteworthy in terms of how often they fail or have issues. Toyota has been sticking with what works vs. trying to push the envelope too far. Look at the fact that most of the "new" 6spd transmissions in the newer Toyotas have be derived or pulled from Lexus vehicles (typically Toyota's "higher end/cutting edge" technology shows up in Lexus and trickles back down to Toyota.)

As for the Tesla dipping in reliability, that doesn't surprise me at all. Those things are on the cutting edge and I'm hearing from techs at the factory that they have issues before they leave the assembly line. But the key thing to remember here is that the Tesla is not so much a "car" as say a Corolla or Camry; but it is more a "commodity" like a Cellphone or Laptop. They are so technologically advanced and centered that their core components are constantly change at a rate that most manufacturers wouldn't dare attempt (they literally are cooking up new batteries for these vehicles and just shipping them from R&D to the Assembly Line as they go.)

The best part? Who cares for the most part if a Tesla isn't "reliable?" Because most of them are under warranty or being leased, and so far Tesla has been extremely good at supporting their customer base through the growing pains of pushing the technological envelope. So I say, don't buy a Tesla, lease one; these guys will get the reliability, efficiency, and details down pat in less than a decade. By that time the infrastructure will have caught up and they'll give everyone else a run for their money on affordable, efficient, and reliable Electric Vehicles. Elon Musk is basically a supervillan mad genius who has planned all the moves for the next few years. :)

Dont think even 1engineer could have said that as well as you did. Toyota for the win! I do have to say 10 years from now I say the Mirai and tesla will dominate the market.

But I'll still be driving my 4x4 Toyota!

New jeeps are crap especially now that fiat owns them. The last good jeep was when AMC still existed. Every time I drive my 87 (I will admit that that is the year Chrysler bought AMC and started the downfall but beside from square headlights the CJ and early YJ are largely unchanged) and get a wave from someone in a new jeep, who lifted it so then they can clear those curbs in the mall parking lot, I won't wave back because they are not the same vehicle and the jk series especially (07+) are junk and all plastic (I'm kind of an a hole). The only other reliable company I buy from is Toyota and Lexus for newer vehicles because time and again they are proven plus the 4Runner is definitely the best vehicle I've owned and I won't ever sell them.

Like I said before, if only the terrorists chose Jeep for their war vehicles instead of Toyota, there wouldnt be nearly as much strife in the world

"Audi, Mazda and Subaru rounded out the top five. The worst performers were Infiniti, Cadillac, Ram, Jeep and Fiat among 28 brands."

As owners of a couple of TJs and a JK ( we're slow learners), and Subarus (WRX, Outback, Forester), SWMBO and I agree with the Subaru ranking as well as the Jeep.
