Toyota to Update Body-on-Frame Models, Considers Hybrid Truck - Motor Trend

Let’s face it, the competition is getting stronger and stronger. Things like the [Ford] Ranger coming back. We have to be able to address that. Now, the Tacoma was completely redone. Basically, they aren't doing shit if you look at the Tacoma. Actually, it gets a little worse.

I think a 2.? 4cyl or 3.0 turbo v6 and 8AT must be on the option list soon both for the Tacoma/4runner or the 5.0L v8 if Toyota is serious about being competitive. The foreign 3rd world models get better drive train options than we do. If the ranger has a 2.7 ecoboost, it's going to be a very serious threat to the Tacoma. And those are just parts bin engines. It's not magic to toss them in.

There's really nothing about the chassis that Toyota can meaningfully upgrade. A frame is a frame. The double wishbone front suspension is the best in the industry already in design. The rear leaf spring or coil spring options are not going to change other than maybe updating the trucks to coils in the rear - but I doubt it. Leafs are better for towing/hauling in most cases.

So the upgrades almost have to be either interior/exterior styling or drivetrain options.

This piece of the article gives me some hope that if/when a new gen 4R debuts, it will have a competitive power train. The article basically confirms a commitment to a new/update 4R among other toyota BOF trucks which we should all be excited about!

This piece of the article gives me some hope that if/when a new gen 4R debuts, it will have a competitive power train. The article basically confirms a commitment to a new/update 4R among other toyota BOF trucks which we should all be excited about!

Just so long as they don't screw it up trying to make it "green".

From what I have heard, there is a new scaleable Body-On-Frame architecture in the TNGA family that will be coming soon. It should underpin Tundra, Sequoia, Tacoma, 4Runner and potentially some others like Land Cruisers, Hilux, etc.

I think it'll be a while before we know much. Probably 18 months or so before 3rd gen Tundra debut.

Sounds like a smart approach by Toyota to keep costs down. So far the new power trains and chassis improvements that are accompanying the latest car TNGA platforms are getting excellent reviews.

The holes aren't the problem. It's a matter of material and coatings. Frame rust should be a non-issue by now. So far I've yet to see any issues on the 120 or 150 platform vehicles.
