Toytec Boss Coilovers VS Icon stage 2

So I have finally located a 2015 black trail premium. This will be more of a mall crawler (To haul around my Bullmastiff & St Bernard) than a offroad rig. I do go up to the snow quite a bit during the year and once in ahwile do some overlanding type stuff but nothing to serious.

Since they are both kits that you can adjust 3" in front, is the Icon stage 2 with the tubular arms worth $812 more than the Toytec Boss Coil over kit with Light Racing Arms fo my application?

I am more concerned on which will give the better on road ride since thats where 90% of my driving takes place. I would love to hear from the guys that run these kits.

Thanks

If you're not planning on increasing tire size, drive your brand spankin new 4R to your hearts content. Determine the necessity after you've taken it to places you plan on frequenting off road. The truck is already suited to on road drivability. I don't think it's worth the cost of suspension if you're not going to really use it.

I will be running aftermarket tires/wheels. I will be running 35's with a 1" body lift, and a lot of cutting. I dont drive stock vehicles, ever. Im not looking to run 33's, just looking to see the on road ride characteristics of each suspension. If I can save an extra $800, I could get the new front Bumper:)

Please please post a picture of 35's on a 5th gen 4Runner after cutting and without any rubbing.
PS: Those front body mounts only get in the way right?
PS PS: Since suspension goes up and down the tires will have to fit into the rear wheel well at full stuff too. No cheating!

The Icon stage 2 coilovers are extended travel, I don't believe the BOSS coilovers are. Also research the LR UCA's. Some people had issues with them. I went with Icon. Read as much as you care to on each, then make an informed decision.

I have a Stage 2 and I love how it rides and handles now.

I, of all people, can appreciate a mall crawler. I can understand running 35s for the look. But for someone that's concerned with on road drivability, going to 35s with a bunch of cutting, cutting costs of $800 when you're spending well over $4k in suspension, wheels and tires, just doesn't make sense. On top of that, you're going to make your full size working group dogs jump into the back of your 2015 Black TEP on 35s?!

I'll sub to a build thread!:pop2:

...you forgot re-gearing. On a sunny day, his truck's shadow will beat him to the next stoplight.

If you're not wheeling it every other weekend why the need for 35's? Keep in mind that adding 35's you will need to upgrade gears to 4:56's to even out the power and odo. That will be an added extra amount of $.
The Icon tubular a-arms have a uniball which is much stronger than the ball joint that comes with light racing arms. The ToyTec kit is Bilstein shocks, Icon is a better performance shock with a thicker body and shaft and is fully rebuildable.

1engineer,
Good point, You beat me too it on the gears while I was typing haha

I run the Boss system on what is now becoming more mall crawler but only did it after the original shocks were blown. The ride is just firmer than stock and feels more grounded which I appreciate. My buddy has an FJ with Icons and it makes all kinds squeaks and drives him nuts. Delving into tire size is not even remotely in my ball park. Good luck with all that. Regearing to 4.56s costs between $4-5k just FYI to add to your mod list. I would have saved the money in KDSS and gotten a SR5 premium since you're just going to get rid of the suspension and you could get ARB lockers done while regearing.

Its not that Im concerned about on road ride quality, BUT, if one system does ride better than another on the road, then I would steer towards that system. If I can save $800 I will, but if the Icon Stage 2 is that much better of a product, I defintley will not cut corners to save $800.

As far as my dogs go, they are my kids, I would NEVER let them jump out of any of my rigs (My last 3 Jeeps have had 6" lifts with 38's). Im 280 lbs and dead lift over 600lbs, so lifting them in and out of my rigs is not an issue. Build thread will be coming up:becky:

Ive never been one thats afraid of cutting up new expensive rigs. I am going to see where we end up without the body lift, but I am sure I will have to add it. I will defintiley let the board know both the good AND the bad!

Thank you, this is exactly what I am looking for. I saw one guy post that the Icon was a little stiff, which is the reason I posted this. I am glad to hear the ride is good, makes my decision much easier.....:usa2:

Because im the one upper! You have a 10 speed, I rode in the tour de france! You rent, I own, a loft actually (Axe commericail):naughty:

Ive never built my rigs the way everyone else does, I like to do things differently. Ive had more than just a few highly modified sports cars/Jeeps. I know what the small expenses are that pop up when you go big, and am willing to deal with it and pay up. Looks like its Icon.

Ive talked with cmlesschwab in depth (Thanks Buddy) about his 35" set up and he is very happy with his rig and says the rubbing is minimal, he has been running this set up for awhile. He has some pictures with his rear completely stuffed and it looks like it works quite well. Im not saying 35's are optimal, but it can be done on a dialy driver no less.

I get your point. But to clarify some of your statements made towards "I" as in "ME" I will have to correct you.
I do not own a 10 speed, I do not rent and I built my last rig an 08' FJ Cruiser into a heavily modified "off road" vehicle that I spent a lot of money on "for off roading". It was on 35's and was regeared with ARB lockers. So I actually have experience with the advice I was giving.
It just doesn't make sense to me why people want to put tons of money into building their truck into an off-road vehicle if they don't even plan on wheeling it.
More build, less talk. Lets see your 4Runner "one upper"!

The Toytec kit he is talking about is built in house with beefier shafts and is rebuildable.

Ok, the Icon kit is still better. Just my opinion though, and I honestly would not buy anything from Icon or ToyTec.
