Toytec Front Coilover Install Problem

Hi All,

In the process of installing a Toytec Boss and having problems installing the front coilovers. I have the coilover in the shock tower and 3 bolts are finger tight but can't get the lower shock bolt through - I need about an inch more. I've read some tips for the 3rd gen but not sure if it applies to a 4th gen. I'm doing this myself so don't have a spare hand... any tips or tricks for getting the lower shock bolt through?

Thanks

you need an inch more to line it up? drop the LCA from the base of the knuckle if you haven't already, that should get you the room. if that doesnt work wrap the end of a steel bar or the like in a towel, put it right about the lower eye, and hit it lightly with a hammer until it slides into the lower shock mount.

This. The first time I lifted the front I used the whole jack handle trick and almost tore the ball joint boot. Since then I have just been loosening the LCA bolts and tightening them back by marking them. It should hold you over fine until you take it to get an alignment. 1-2 turns will loosen it enough to give you plenty of room to get it in there.

Thanks for all the suggestions... going to give them a try.

I also noticed the inner CV boot on the drivers side is torn - almost seems as if it was defective to begin with since its such a clean split (pics below). Any suggestions on a temporary repair until I can get to doing a permanent fix?

With how much that is torn, I would just replace complete axle. If it has been that way for a while, I wouldn't want to take out, clean up, and repack. Too much ish could of gotten in there. Not worth the small savings for how much extra work it would be.

But maybe someone has another suggestion.

Yeah, was thinking the same but wanted to make a temporary fix until I get replace the cv axle...

Got the front coilovers on... thanks for all the suggestions. Rear shocks were a ***** to get off... and I thought the front was a pain.

I am installing the Boss kit on my 04. I have the left front side done but have run into an issue on the from right (passenger). In following the instructions to remove the 2 bolts attaching the LCA to the Spindle assembly I must have messed something up. I got the new coil over in but cannot reconnect the spindle to the LCA. I am worried I let the axle drop too far?

The only thing that is dropped right now is your LCA. Do you have a bottle Jack or any other jack you could put under the LCA and jack it up? That pressure will bring it up to the connecting points allowing you to get the bolts in and tighten.

Thanks! I do have a jack and will do that. I tried it earlier but probably did not raise the arm enough. That's when I was worried I broke the rule in the instructions to not let the axle drop too much and had messed up the axle because of the way the boot looks.

I appreciate your help!

Disconnect the UCA at the upper ball joint. So much easier to slide the coil over in it.
I just did a 5th Gen Friday. I removed the sway bar link, brake line bracket, upper ball joint from UCA and that's pretty much it. I have always disconnected the 2 lower UCA bolts in the past but I find that being more work and not as easy to get the Coil lover in.

yup. you pulled that cv joint apart. either get a new axle or rebuild the joint

Thanks for the help everyone!

I found another thread where the spider "tripod" joint was pulled out. Can it slide back in easily? The boot is completely in tact.

1. Will it slide back in?

The axle is only 2 years old. From what I have read on other posts it is easier to replace axle than rebuil it.

2. If it slides back in the housing (inner cv) has the integrity of the axle been compromised?

Got the joint back together and finished the install. I cannot thank you all enough for your help! I appreciate the forum so much!

Here's the after pic. I just wanted to share what you helped do!
