Trade in my '09 Urban Runner???

If i was an RN, i care less 'bout the money. Money can be replaced. But having my hands and the thrill driving the new 5th gen with all whistles and bells being one of the thousands owning them today since they're rare on the road, having ppl turn their heads and a spotlight in any parking lot would be nice. imp:

Soooo, after thinking long and hard about it I believe I'm going to keep my '09 Urban Runner. I do like the new look of the '10 BUT I just can't stand to lose $12,000-$13,000 outright... since it is fully paid for and I paid cash for it.

Maybe I will do like you guys said and keep her for a few more years, then see where I'm at and what I want.

I think the majority of my desire for the 2010 is because of the "new" factor and the completely new look. But realistically, it's probably something that I'll get over soon... and when I do I will STILL be in love with my Urban Runner. Haha.

Smart choice, IMO.

What you need to do is convince a significant other that they really want a 5th gen. That way you'll have both your UR and a 5th gen. My wife (also an RN, btw) loved it as soon as she saw it, so it wasn't terribly hard to convince her that we "needed" it.

You won't gain much by getting the '10, in fact, unless you get a Limited, you'll be getting a cheapened-in-many-ways vehicle.

Good choice in keeping it. Financially speaking, new vehicles are the worst investment. You can lose 25% of its value in depreciation.

I just picked up a 5th gen TE a week ago and have 1200 miles on it.

This is my 4th 4Runner, 96, 97, 06, and now the 10.

The first few days I had it I did not like it as much as the 06. The 4th Gen is a very nice vehicle. I will admit that I am liking it more now that I have put a few miles on it.

A few features the 4th Gen had that my 5th does not.

1. One touch starting. On the 4th you just bump the key and the starter runs until the engine starts up. The 5th is conventional where you have to hold the key in the starter position until the engine starts.

2. My 5th does not have the multi-mode 4x4 system like the 4th does. I have built a supercharger system for my 4th Gen and I love the all-wheel drive mode when the roads are wet to keep the rear wheel spin under control and to keep that throttle chopping skid control from preventing serious acceleration.

3. Auto climate control. The TE does not have it and it is the conventional type were you set the temp, fan speed, and so on. Not a big deal, but once you get used to it, it is hard to go back.

4. So far the MPG on the 4th is better. I get 22 MPG on road trips even with the supercharger. The 5th gets 20 MPG on road trips so far with no supercharger yet.

5. The 4th has a better quality feel in the doors and other interior parts. The 5th seems to have very thin sheet metal in the doors and sound a little tinny like all the newer Toyota trucks.

6. The seats in both are very comfortable for me.

7. Both are very quiet at highway speed.

8. The one thing that really stands out on the 5th is the nav system with the bluetooth cell phone interface. That works very well in the 5th.

9. The 5th has heated side mirrors and has a heater built into the lower part of the windshield. Don't have this in the 4th. It would be nice to have but it really does not snow enough to make that a big deal.

10. The 5th has much stiffer roll bars and corners much flatter and the KDSS allows full articulation off road.

11. The locker and the A-Trac on the 5th TE along with the KDSS makes it a better off roader out of the box. If you don't off road they are not useful to you.

Now if I had a very nice 09 I would not upgrade to the 2010 unless there was something specific I need the 2010 for. The 09 is a very, very nice vehicle.

It's no secret that Toyota deleted a lot of the nice little features that us 4th gen owners are use to having, but I think that's what they had to do in order to keep prices from getting out of control on the 5th gen. Toyota already said the 4Runner was going "back to its roots", but I don't think anyone realized that meant getting rid of so many little features such as the one-touch start you mentioned already. Hey, you can always pay big $$$ for a 5th gen Limited and then you'll get a keyless pushbutton start.

We had a LandCruiser 5.7 for a while in Cali that was on loan to Petersons magazine. We did a few things to upgrade the performance of it for them.

It had the push button start. It was really nice in a lot of ways. I really hate fumbling in my pocket for the right key. I got to many trucks. The LandCruiser was nice as you could leave the transponder in your pocket and grab the door handle and it would unlock for you. Then put your foot on the brake and hit the start button and off you go.

The one thing that always worried me about that is how do you shut down the engine in an emergency?? As far as I could tell the only way to shut it down was to put it in park and have your foot on the brake. I like the key so that no matter what happens you can always kill the engine and the fuel pump.

I haven't tried it, but I read that if you push the button down for 3 seconds the engine should turn off.

Again I haven't tried it, and it was an article that was related to the accelerator problems, not specific to the 4Runner.

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum... and I have a question. Or a poll, really. Just asking for your opinion.

In September I bought a brand new 2009 Toyota 4Runner- Urban Runner. It has 10,500 miles on it and it is completely paid for. My dilemma is... I love my Urban Runner to death, but I'm really kinda diggin the 2010! So my question is... would I be a complete moron (which I have been told by several people!) to trade in my UR on a 2010?? The thing is, I paid $39,000 for my UR and the dealerships I have talked to will give me 26,000-27,000 for it so I would be losing a lot of money.

What do you guys think??? Here is a picture of my 2009 Urban Runner...

Yeah, but the total of $39,000 includes the Urban Runner package, plus some extra stuff I added, and the extra warranty I added. It really wasn't too bad considering I paid for it in full.

Rule #1, never trade a vehicle in to a dealer. Other than that, its up to you. Sell it outright and use the extra $$ after paying off your current ride for a down payment.

First, your numbers are wrong. One way or the other she'll be losing money. Right now she be losing $13K, so she'll have $26K on hand towards the new 5th gen. If she's infatuated with the 5th gen, does money really matter? Like i said, if she loves the UR then keep it! Then she can buy (cash or financed) the new 5th gen if she desires. Now she has 2 vehicles to maintain vs 1. But that's all up to her. And these suggestions/advices are just what we think.

yes, people can do anything they want. but, i think most people read the original question as "would it be [financially] silly to do this?"

This was a great post. Your U.Runner is/was beautiful. Love owning Outright. I have a 2008 UR SR5,4WD, 6, in White Pearl & luv it (esp when I get AC resolved).
