That being said, we sold our 2011 Jeep Patriot to get a 2001 4runner. I had to convince my wife that a newer car isn't a better car.

That was my thinking as well. However I think in my heart I knew I never could do the swap. Just needed some like minded guys to assure me I was thinking logically.

If it makes you feel better I have a 2wd 2000 and a 4wd 2001.

Yeah, like, I had to explain it to my wife.

But really, with the Patriot I was thinking we would be lucky to hit 150k miles.


We bought the 4runner with 160k thinking we could easily make 250k without major repair.


I don't know explorers too well, BUT with any car, if a trans goes out at 150k(ish), we're talking about $3,000 repair.



We don't generally see that problem in the 4runner.

when my wife got t-boned and it totaled, we spent 1k more than the pay out and got her a 97 4wd, I like it so much that I got my 99 4wd...

we only got 4wd cause of the places we go, visit and hike. oh and I love dirt roads.

if AZ was flat everywhere, yeah woudn't need 4wd. but it's def not flat.


good choice on the yota... me, I sold my 75 ford bronco with mustang 5.0 HP, d-locker and tru-trac'd on 33's for my 99... sadest day is when I saw it drive away... but I'm happy with my 99 cause it's WAY more reliable.

Your right [MENTION=115590]StreetCreeper[/MENTION]. I blamed you for something specifically when it's not you and not necessarily what you meant. I was soured by the last incident a few months ago and took it out on you. Seems somehow certain questions or topics just seem to divert to that issue of 2wd VS 4wd. I'm just bummed for myself and all the many 2wd guys on this forum that love our trucks but somehow get bashed over one seemingly small difference. I do believe there are guys that regret not getting a 4wd. I am not and will never be one of them unless I move out of North FL. To the others here who feel they do need to belittle the non-4wd guys, just think of this post next time and maybe reconsider the need to do so.

There's a disproportionate amount of people on these type of forums that build SUV's to be off-roading rigs (or at least aspire to) so they cannot even fathom not having 4WD. To them it's like owning a hatchback or a station wagon lol. In reality, there are tons of 2WD 4Runners on the road and besides, you get better gas mileage and have less parts to keep up. 2WD have a lower cost of ownership.

I'm just surprised at how much better a 2WD drives on the road compared to a 4WD. They have their place, and they make a pretty nice daily driver since they ride nicer but still give you the ability to jump curbs for those times when traffic isn't going as planned. Definitely a lot quicker. They can put the ricers in their place easily.

I say keep the 4runner. As a fellow 2wdriver, I'm more than pleased with my selection of vehicle. While I would not have said, "No", if a 4wd was available when I was searching, 2wd suits my needs fine (because Houston is flatter than Kiera Knightley's chest).

I got the truck for it's reviews, longevity, and MPG (which REALLY is not bad if you don't drive like a complete ass). It's quick and powerful, can tow 5k, and can haul a BUNCH with the seats down. That fact that it looks BA is a very nice perk.

As a side note, I find it ironic that everyone here is saying to keep the Toyota because American doesn't compare, but when I created a thread a couple months ago that laughingly pointed out the people in the Mopar and Chevy forums that were OH SO EXCITED to get to 200k, it spawned 2 pages of arguing ...
