Trail Grid Pro Head Units

I’m considering one of the Sony head units from Trail Grid Pro, but looking for real world experiences. I’m on the fence with the flush mounted models versus the floating style. Both look somewhat out of place, which makes me lean towards the bigger screens offered in the floating units.

For those who have the floating units, which model do you have? How far “flush” are you able to adjust it so it doesn’t stick out as much? They offer two floating options on their website. I like the smaller style Sony 8100 offers compared to the larger Sony 9500 option. My concern with the 8100 is it doesn’t mention having the ability to monitor vehicle information. Does anyone with the 8100 regret not going the 9500 route?

I used a sony 8100 from TGP and found a good deal on a 2022 head unit and installed that. I liked the screen size of the 8100 , I wanted to have it more flush and lower but never changed it. I kept it the way TGP mounts it, but it can be lowered and flush mounted. Overall sony os is solid and car play worked well! I basically used car play entire time I had it vs listening to the radio.

I have the 8100 as well. I have messed with the mounting and found that the way TGP ships it is the best for my needs.

I keep checking the Maestro website to see if the 8100 is supported. Not yet, but that is apparently up to Sony to make it available to Maestro for support. Clearly they haven't so far.

Great power, sounds good with upgraded speakers and a self powered sub.

I was also considering the TGP floating headunit as well until I found I can retro a newer 2020+ headunit into my 2015. The main reason being, with the OEM headunit, I can switch back and forth from factory settings and use Apple Carply/Android Auto when I want to. With the TGP headunit, you are stuck with the Sony interface (which I believe does not have built in navigation). So if that is important to you, you would be stuck using Carplay or AA all the time or at least for maps/navigation. With OEM headunit, I can use factory nav, and also have the option for Google Maps, Waze etc when I want. I also preferred the factory look and finish of the OEM headunit. The floating HU just seems to stick out a bit too much for me. Just my .02!

They have side pics on their website and it looks closer than my current Pioneer unit. You get used to having a floating screen and you notice that a DD screen is much smaller when you get into a vehicle with one.

Since the title of this post is on point, I would like to give a shout out to Trail Grid Pro. I had bought the Sony XAV-AX5600 from them, which was an easy install experience. However the Apple CarPlay started to steadily deteriorate, where it would sometimes not recognize the phone was connected and I would have to plug in over and over, or would seize or disconnect with a loud buzz. Firmware updates and resets did not help. A couple years after purchase, I reached out to Trail Grid Pro for advice and they simply offered a full credit of the original purchase for a new unit. I opted for the XAV-AX7000 bundle which is working great (fingers crossed). It's above-and-beyond customer service and, to me, proves why it is worth shopping from a small company with a real person on the other end of the transaction, not a phone tree or a bot. And the Maestro connection they are providing now plugs into OBD and shows stats in the headunit.
