Trail riding and mudding in a manual?

Manual

There is not alot of mud here in Colorado, however there are trails and rocks and Manual is IMO the only way to go. The vehicle is in the gear you put it in and stays there uphill/downhill/sidehill, you are in complete control of your vehicle.

For mud, sand, deep snow you can't beat an auto just step on it and steer!!

There are plenty of days I am stuck in Denver traffic and wish I had an auto, but those days give me time to think of the next place and time I get to go wheel'n and I am glad I have a manual!!

as for Mechanically, there is a huge difference trail riding and rock crawling staying in a gear and knowing what gear that is, if your down shifting your auto while wheeling you should know there is an advantage to having a manual for that given moment.

To each his own, there are benefits to both transmisions or they would just make 1 (and it would be manual).

exactly and it's not like if i down shift the auto into 1st or 2nd it won't stay there and be just as good as any manual would be in 1st or second without having to feather the clutch, really it's personal preference. it's not like i can't achieve the same thing, i guess i can't lock it in 3rd,4th or 5th, but at that point you're either drag racing or driving on the freeway....off road it's the same except for the ass-o-meter, meaning how connected your ass feels to the trail and vehicle. but that's personal preference.

show me a place where an manual has a solid advantage over a auto in any moderate trail situation, i'm willing to admit i'm wrong on this if there's something besides personal preference....i like learning, so school me lol.
so far it's like me saying limiteds are better than the sr5's....well that depends doesn't?

exactly!!! but it would be a flappy paddle trans like on the sports cars with auto and manual transmission lol

if your limited is locked then big difference since my sr5 has no locking rear dif.

I haven't wheeled an auto in so long I think the last time was in my sisters car through a farm field in ND, I have a friend who was wheeling his auto down a steep hil here in CO and he had the tranny in low to use the engine to slow him down, he started going faster and faster down this hill and had to apply brakes heavily and ended up stopping just shy of a tree. I asked him WTF happened and he said, "It's an auto" I was like put it in low, he said it was...

I think it's cuz it was a ford, lol

offroading and mudding are not mutually exclusive. I am being light. I just know for a fact that mudding is lame. This is a fact and is not disputable :lmao:

muddin' (how we say in in nc) is ALOT of fun. juvenile, yes. but lame and no fun? chill man, it's wicked fun! too far to drive to find rocks.

i have an auto and its great off road. in low range, it does not shift into neutral when you let off the gas, but the tourque converter still slips some. i plan on doing a manual t/c lockup button to use kind of like a clutch. that will realy help whengoing down steep sections of a trail.

In traffic, I prefer manual. On an auto, my leg gets so tired going from gas to brake constantly and holding it hard enough to ensure the car doesn't creep forward. In a manual, I just gas and clutch and that's usually enough and I find that more comfortable.

i love muding in my truck

but then again i am a highschool kid so im alowed to be stupid and have lots of fun at the same time. im sure than in 20 to 30 years ill look back and remember how much of an idiot i was...but then ill realize how much fun i had.

Yeah, I lived in raleigh....I found plenty of rocks but now that tellico is gone, you'd have to join a club and ride private land. Thank goodness for Dayton TN.

I did the mud thing. You may think its fun now, but you'll see its not worth it someday :)

Hey godzilla I respect your opinion, but in so cal we do alot of mudding.
We see very few high school kids offroading here.
