There's a design difference. The factory V6 hitches are higher; they actually come out of the rear of the bumper. The V8 hitches ride lower reducing the need for a drop.

thanks. i wasn't really sure. i have a pretty low toy trailer with a really low gvwr and low tongue weight. i just wanted to be sure i didn't do any permanent damage if i mounted it the other way. i might just use the toyota one for my boat and get one with a bigger drop for my toy trailer.
also is there a possibility that my hitch could be mounted over another one? its hard to tell, and the receiver is stock from toyota, but it looks like there is another hitch mounted right above it. its weird. almost like the 2003-present explorers with the 1" 1/2 receiver mounted stock and then putting a 2inch under it.

I think you should mount the ball in the way that makes the trailer tongue flat or most level, even if it happens to be contrary to what the manual is suggesting.
I think the part you're referring to on the V8 hitch, just a plate that's covering the mount to the rear cross member rather than leave a gap between the receiver box and bumper. No I don't think Toyota would stoop down and do something that janky. The hitch has a true 2" receiver.
