Trailer Security

Hey guys - I'm looking for some ideas to keep a rented U-haul cargo trailer secure for our upcoming move to CO. We'll be staying in a hotel for 2 nights and I am not familiar, nor overly-optimistic, about the areas.

I do plan to try to park close to the room and, if possible, back it up to a wall or similar, but I know that may be beyond my control. I'm just wondering what else you guys use in terms of locks, security, theft deterrents, etc.

Hotel should have cameras on the parking lot. Put it in plain view of a camera, preferably under a street lamp, and ask the night clerk to keep an eye on it. Park it right in front of the front doors where the clerk can actually see it, if you can.
 
maybe take the license plate in with you. if nothing else maybe the cops might spot it and pull it over because it doesn't have a plate. I have a small pull behind cargo trailer. it's kept outside so I have a hitch lock on it and removed the license plate.

Also like someone else said. Try to park under lights, either close to your room/window or right up front are both good ideas.

I honestly wouldn't worry to much but I understand your concern.

Also do you have a lock for your hitch/ball too?

I do have one of those locks and yeah forgot I need a hitch lock. The last one I left on too long and got stuck on our old SUV. I still see it around town sometimes with the same hitch cover. :lol:

I'm probably being paranoid... but I remember the last time I stopped in Nashville I ended up being in some crappy hotel behind a Popeye's and probably got 3 hours of sleep before I was ready to split.

Can't local law enforcement tow you if you don't have a tag? Plus I would think a smart thief would throw on a little "lost tag" note to get them where they are going.

Is there anything that will prevent the coupler from being disconnected from the hitch ball itself?

I think that's perfect for what I was thinking but I just realized Uhaul has those screw style couplers. Doh... I may be stuck just using a chain/lock or something.
 
Just padlock the safety chains and the back door. No big deal. I hate to say it but very few thieves steal a U Haul trailer because, let's face it, while you may value it's contents, to other people it's just household junk. If it was something nice and worth something on to pawn or sell (motorcycle, tools, machinery, guns) it would be in a custom trailer or already locked up.

Maybe I need to get a Manure Hauling sign for the sides and door. :biggrin1:
 
If you are super worried about it, get some of these - Vibration Alarm Two Pack - I used them on my trailer when I moved from Dallas to the east coast. We had to stop 2 nights, and I would randomly place 4 of these around the trailer. Don't use the tape to stick them down, just place it right inside the door and if a thief does happen to break in, he will probably kick it and set it off.

Nice - thanks for the heads up. Did you have any issues with false alarms?
