Transfer case question

I noticed this attached to my transfer case and I just want to know... What is it? Looks like a counter weight? Can't figure it out. Thanks

That's pretty much what it is. It's a vibration dampener of sorts.

Dumb question. Is this supposed to be on all trucks?

I don't know if the OP has a 6 or an 8 cyl. Mine is an 8 and I pulled the engine covers today to clean them up and lo and behold, no damper mounted on mine.

I bought it used so I don't have the entire history on the truck.

Edit to add: I did look at the parts diagrams from the manual download thread and at TRD Parts .Com and don't see this thing anywhere.

If you are referring to the two steel blocks attached via a support frame to the bottom of the transfer case, they look like a vibration dampening device. But, if you mean the black device with the shiny screws, I am not sure. It doesn't look stock to me. From the pic, it looks like there might be some wiring attached to the other side of it. If so, then my best guess is some type of electrical locking device for the torsen unit in the transfer case, or possibly an additional overdrive?

He's talking about the steel blocks. The black box is the actuator to go from 2H to 4H-4L, or 4H-4L if you have a constant 4 WD.

Black box with tiny screws is part of the transfer case, I believe.
