4th Gen Transfer Case Replacement INSIGHT? (185K used T Case too much?)

I’ve got a 2004 4Runner SR5 V6 4WD with about 230K miles. My transfer case is shot and I’ve been calling around for replacements.

I found a used transfer case from a 2006 4Runner with 185K miles on it for $400. Do you think that’s worth grabbing or should I be holding out for one with fewer miles? I can’t find any rebuilt ones locally but my concern is that mine got bad around 205K which isn't far off from this potential replacement.

Also curious about the install side. One shop told me it’s not too difficult and said “if you can do brakes, you can do the transfer case.” Has anyone here done the swap themselves? How tough was it in practice?

What's wrong with yours? Is it not repairable? I would say on the mileage front, it more depends on how much it was used and maintained. Mine is still fine at 220k.

When it comes to swapping, I've replaced one on a Ranger that wasn't too hard. I did the transmission on a full size blazer, dealing with that t-case was brutal. So heavy. I would guess the Toyota is closer to the Ranger in size and weight. Extra hands and a lift is helpful but being somewhat high off the ground is a huge plus.
