Transmission appendage- what does it do?

I'd never noticed this before and I can't figure out for the life of me what it might do, so perhaps I'm missing part. This is mounted to the side of my manual transmission (97 SR5 4X4)

It's a vibration damper.

Just looks like a vibration dampener to me, but what do I know. Just guessing.

it doesn't do much. I took it off years ago and never noticed a difference

Has something with the harmonics of the the motor. There is a rubber isolated weight on the muffler too.


V8 run smoother so there is none of these band aids on them.:

Mine is bent up at a 45 degree angle from the rocks... no ill effects at all. If anything, I'm happier - one less thing to drag.
