Transmission Cooler

I don't have a transmission cooler on my 2004 V6 4x4.

I have a ScanGuage but I don't have any factory sensors on temp either. Bummer

I really dont have any baseline info to really figure out if I need this, but I spend enough time in the hot deserts with my foot to the floor bogged out in sand and with a lot of time spend in 4 Low with my RPMs up.

So for maintenance... I have been doing ATF fluid exchanges / drain fill after trips with a lot of abuse in case I have been cooking the oil.

I would like to add a transmission cooler before next desert season goes into full swing... what are my best options?

It's probably a good idea for you to add one.

My brother added a Hayden 678 to his FJ. Has worked out well for him. Noticeably lower temps according to his scan gauge but I forget by how much.

Derale makes some nice coolers as well, my brother just bought a power steering cooler from them actually.

I'm looking to potentially upgrade my stock transmission cooler and add a power steering cooler as well. The 4Runner has a bit more real estate in the front grille than the FJ which is nice.
 
Really glad I added one on my 5th, seems to have dropped temps 10-15 degrees. Sure helped this weekend in the NC mountains. I also added a 5" fan (Derale) on a toggle switch to help on those 95 degree summer days in stop and go traffic.

I get trans temps through the Torque app and my buddy has it in his 4th gen. I gave him the 5th gen pid equations but not sure if he entered those or others he found but he sent me a screen shot with it up and running on his phone.

I have looked around for the PID codes or Xcodes for the ScanGuage, but I think my 2004 lacks the physical temp sensor.

I could be wrong buy all signs point to NO. I would need to install my own.

At this point, I rather just add the cooler and call it a day if I am going to go though that much trouble.

Oh yea install the cooler for sure. The Torque app was an after thought on my part. Do you have a Trans oil warning light on your cluster when ignition is on pre start? If so the sensors are there. I have been known to be wrong tho lol. He may have a later year of 4th gen that has the sensors. I love it cause I monitor torque converter and pan temps. So when the converter starts heating up (always hotter than the pan), you can watch to make sure the pan temps stay in the safe range.
 
I don't know for sure if the 2004 has the sensor but I do believe it has, my 2004 owner's manual does says it has a A/T oil temp light and as such it should have the sensor.
I do have a OBDII doggle and the free version of the Torque app which dosen't have the A/T temp option, so I haven't been able to confirmed that via the Torque app, I will be upgrading to the Pro version in the future.

I have a 2007 v6 sport with the b&m trans cooler and a auto meter trans temp gage. When i am trailing around it will get to 200 or so. I added a electric fan on a switch for waiting on the trails. The b&m has a built in thermostat to let it warm up.

I think I am going with your recommendation and link... looks perfect. It looks like the 698 [MENTION=56702]BADCUDA1[/MENTION] linked works too. Bigger unit.

How do you size these things, or bigger the better? I got a couple 12v server fans I can rig up to this too.. now I can feel like I own a trophy truck.

Also, do you know which power steering cooler you might have used?

Derale has a 8000 series PS cooler or you can use their 9000 series transmission cooler for PS fluid (my brother asked and Derale said it would be fine)

8000 series is 7/8" thick whereas the 9000 series is 1-1/4" thick.


My brother got the 9 row 9000 series transmission cooler for his PS fluid Derale #13612

I might get the 5 or 9 row 9000 series transmission cooler for my PS system but haven't given it too much thought yet with regards to measuring the layout.

Not sure on the sizing. The thicker it is the better the cooling per square inch but less airflow (or less cooler air) will flow through to the rest of the radiators behind it so it's a trade-off.

If the Derale has stuff that integrates will as a system between Trans and PS than I am all for it. I guess it makes mounting easier.

It looks like the Hayden coolers are thinner (3/4"), but pretty nice quality.

Derale you can get thicker (3/4 to 1-1/4") and with a smaller surface area, but my brother's Derale doesn't have the quality of his Hayden.

Regarding the thickness I'm not sure which is better in our application to be honest.

I choose the Hayden 698 for size and it has an internal devise that is to by-pass the cooler until it has some heat is in the fluid. Cold fluid isn't good either. I put it in-series after the OEM cooler.
