Transmission Replaced at 67K miles

Remanufactured transmission installed at 67K miles.

So in the last couple weeks I noticed a shudder or vibration, not unlike driving on a washboard road, while accelerating under slight load at around 1200 to 1500rpm. This coincided with my next scheduled service so I took it in to the dealer and had them investigate in addition to agreeing to a regular 70K service ($176).
Of course the mechanic couldn't re-create the issue, so I had to come back in and drive him around myself, and found a slight grade, feathered the gas. . and shudder shudder. . he felt it. He thought it might be a driveshaft issue as we rolled back to the dealer. They gave me a rental and started investigating.
Anyway, 12 hours later I get a call from the service rep saying its a torque converter issue and that it and the transmission will be replaced (on Toyota).
In a sense I was relieved because I have an extended warranty (platinum 7yr/75K miles) that I was beginning to feel was money poorly spent, and this came up. . . But, according to the tech, their was a TB about this some time ago, and Toyota would have covered it anyway. The warranty bill (to Toyota) is $5,034.92
This was all a bit of a shock, but in the end I am pleased with the way the dealer took care of it (gave me an FJ cruiser rental for no charge) and hope this is the last surprise this faithful truck gives me.
So far I've driven about 60 miles with the new tranny and no problems.
Anybody else have this issue?

I believe the tab is tsb-0089-12 for shudder or hard 1-2 shift, it only impacted a select vin range to model year 2012.

I'm dealing with a similar issue. I feel it's my torque converter. My tranny fluid was slightly low, topped it off and added an additive. It's running smoother now but I haven't had anywhere to check it at highway speeds(where I notice it).

I may have experienced this issue the other day. My 2010 SR5 has a little over 65k on it. This was the first time I noticed similar symptoms to what you described. I haven't had it happen again yet, but glad to hear there is a TSB on it in case I do have the same issue. Thanks for bringing it up and glad they took care of you!

I haven't yet read the actual TSB but yes I think it is the 1-2 shift causing the shudder when the torque converter wasn't locking up properly. (I am reading more about it on the forum--3 years in here and I'm just now using the search feature. Seen many flamed for not, lol.)

For me it was constant shudder that might last for a few seconds at most, between 1200 and 1500 rpms, usually at 20-35 mph. Not sure what gear I was in at the time. And it really only began less than two weeks before I took it in--so this problem came and went fast for me. New tranny's all good for now.

So, by "constant shudder" you mean "multiple repeating Thuds/Jerks at low spreads between 1200 and 1500rpms?"

Sorry, I just wanted to be clear because I have the 1-2 "rough shift" or thud when using light throttle. I usually experience this in stop and go traffic. I only experience one "Thud" though during the 1-2 shift at slow speeds. My 2013 has done it since new, and isn't included in the TSB, and there are no updates that address this issue on my vehicle (Toyota checked).

I believe our issues are different, but I want to make sure, because that isn't something I want to deal with out of warranty.

No. It really was a vibration of constant frequency that felt like going over evenly spaced ridges in the pavement--and it only occurred for a few seconds under the conditions previously described.

I guess I do need to read the TSB; but this T-SB-0089-12 is what the tech used to justify the warranty replacement. I knew something was wrong--didn't know what--and was ok with the repair provided Toyota was picking up the tab. If it had been coming out of my pocket, I would have encouraged more troubleshooting and a more economical solution.
Good luck with it. As I said, I am pleased with he way it turned out, but I don't think the dealer would have caught this (or rather checked my VIN against the TSB and informed me of it) if I had not specifically prodded them to investigate the problem.

Update on replaced transmission

I have been off this forum for too long. Just felt like updating after having my transmission replaced at 67K miles, mileage is now 147K and the transmission drives and shifts smooth and proper. No issues. So glad I bought this truck 7 years ago. Maybe its finally time to bolt on a supercharger!
