A few weeks ago i started up my 4Runner (2024 Ltd 4wd) and got a blank screen on the HU. When I put the truck in reverse, the screen lit up with the usual rear and overhead views. The display worked fine. Otherwise the HU failed to boot up. No Toyota splash screen. In the darkness of my garage however, I could see the backlight glow behind the screen for three seconds, then turn off for two seconds. It did this repeatedly, and continued as long as the truck power was on. The system was unresponsive to the power switch. Disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes had no effect.
Off to the dealer for warranty replacement. I called parts to see if the HU was in stock. They laughed. They don't stock $5K parts. I asked if I could pay for them to order it, and send it back if unneeded. No. The service department required I drop off my 4Runner for the day so they could do diagnostics. No loaner car, just an Uber ride to home and back. After they performed all their checks, they concurred the HU was dead and placed an order for a new replacement. They said they'd never sen this issue. This is a service department that sees 200 vehicles per day. They're doing warranty Tundra engine replacements one per day.
About one week later the part arrived and I again dropped the 4Runner off for the day. I was told they didn't make appointments. That afternoon I picked up my truck with new HU. I was told warranty cost for the part was $3K. (Zero for me.)
My biggest complaint was they got a small spot of some sort of old grease on my passenger seat cover. The kind that builds up on a bicycle chain. A mixture of oil and finely ground black minerals that doesn't wash out with ordinary cleaners. It took a while, but I was able to remove the stain with 409 glass cleaner. (Windex didn't work.) This is why I never take my truck to the dealer unless I have to.
