Transmission Slipping

My 2000 4Runner, SR5, transmission slips in overdrive. A year ago, it had the pink milkshake and I caught it before it slipped. I pumped the torque converter, installed an external cooler, dropped the pan, and cleaned the magnets, and put new fluid in. In the last few months, I have noticed the slipping when on the highway under load only. Anyone else have this happen to them? Ideas?

Thanks.

Well given the history, I'd change the fluid asap, complete flush again. All depends on how much if any coolant got into internal trans components, some parts can't handle water, they swell up and can no longer do their job, hence the slipping. Flushing again helps get the moisture out. Many on here have success with what you've done, don't know if it w/b long term or just a delay of a rebuild. Best of luck!

Clutch packs and antifreeze go together worse than oil and water. If you have not been saving your pennies for a used one (cheaper) or rebuild, start today. Short of doing such the problem will only worsen with time.

Or swap in a 5 spd R150f instead.

So you believe another flush will not work?

Sorry, what is a R150f?

It couldn't hurt, in fact if it gets bad enough you may try something such as Lucas transmission additive.

But the hard truth is that the coolant attacks the friction discs quickly (part of the clutch pack) and there is no real way to repair them. The transmission must be removed and torn down.
Automatic Transmissions: What Makes Them Work

If it were me I'd keep an eye out for a used tranny with low miles before having one rebuilt.

I would not mind a manual but would that not be a lot more work by replacing the shifter and reworking the foot pedals?

Would a R150f be cheaper than an automatic?

When my torque converter bites the dust (slowly going) I hope to switch out my auto to a R150. I have priced it out, doing the work myself, to about $750 in all. It could be lower. Hopefully Jon will chime in again, and be able to provide a better total cost idea.

The cheapest solution IMHO is to find another used auto tranny. Is it 4wd?

Yes it is.

Is it happening in all gears, or just one in particular? I was having an issue after my pink milkshake. I ended up replacing my 2nd and 3rd shift solenoids. After replacing those everything was good. It wasn't as perfect as it was, but an improvement none the less. Everybody has an opinion on this, and each situation is different. There are people on here that have 10k plus miles after this with no issues. There are also people who require a new transmission. Try new fluid for starters since it's your cheapest thing to try.

To slightly hijack...

I also have a slipping auto transmission that needs replaced. Is there any difference in the auto transmissions between the different years? I'm pretty sure they are all the A340E but I wanted to make sure there wasn't anything funny between years.

Not that I think I have much to worry about. I'm looking at a used 2000 transmission. Think I'm pretty safe.

Just the overdrive, that may be fourth(?), when under a load such as going uphill. I'm either selling this (retiring and going back to cars) or giving it to my son but either way, it needs to be fixed. I'll try new fluid first. Thanks.

Well I tried the new fluid and Lucas. In 4th, it's slipping more and more. I think it's shot. I'd like to put in the manual transmission if that is cheaper. Can you guys give me some recommendations please?

That is too bad Jeff. I was hoping I was wrong but sometime physics gets in the way.

Will you be doing the swap of the transmission? If so, then follow Jon's link from when he did his. Another guy from Kentucky also did a R150 5spd swap.
