Transmission ?

Hey guys,

So the W56-B in my 4runner has been on its way out for the last few months (Long story). Well tonight on my way to class it finally gave up the ghost. My future father in law has a toyota pickup that is either an 84 or 85 (waiting on a text back to figure out which), so from my research the donor truck has either the G52 or G54 trans in it. Will either of those transmissions swap into my truck ( 86 4runner, 22RE, W56-B ) ? If anyone knows or has experience in this matter please speak up, if this trans will swap in it'll be free!! Im trying to get this info as quick as possible so i can get a new clutch and hydraulics ordered. Thanks in advance for any advice or help!!

It will bolt right up. Worst case, you might need a different length of driveline.

So the donor truck is an 84, so its got the G52. Is there any differences in the transfer case between the donor and mine? Also I saw somewhere that the G series transmissions were geared a little different than the W series, will that affect my daily driving at all?

The gearing won't affect anything. Same transfer case, the only difference might be top shift vs forward shift. No big deal though.

Not at all, I'll bet you could drive a w56 and a g52 back to back and you wouldn't know the difference unless somebody told you.

the G52 had a forward shift t/c
W-56 was top shift, should not be an issue

g52 is said to be a 'weaker' transmission, plenty of GREAT info on Marlincrawler on transmissions.

on a 94 runner 4x4 and 3.slo i have a sligtht gring in 2nd and 3rd... im thinking ima have to replace it soon.

Thanks for all the replies fellas. I was able to run down a W56-B in an 86 that was rebuilt less than a year ago for $300, going to pull it tomorrow. I ordered a new AISIN clutch, master cylinder, slave cylinder, fly wheel, rear main seal, and a starter last night. Am I missing any parts I should replace while i've got the trans out? Also is there a certain process to adjusting the master cylinder when you put it in? Ive always just adjusted it until it fit when i've replaced them. Thanks again for all the help.

with the master cylinder just bleed it like you do breaks.
A few tips on your job, get some swivel end extensions. access the top trans bolts threw the shifter hole in the floor board. all but one bolt head faces the rear just one on the drivers side lower ( exhaust heat shield) faces front other than the starter. check recheck and get someone to check for you the direction you install the clutch.
