TRD Off Road - Max speed in 4H?

We got a dusting of snow last night. Between the cold temps and the lack of road prep, driving was treacherous at times this morning.

I was making use of my 4H (4wd High) for a little extra insurance, but started to wonder... Is there a max speed when in 4H, or is it OK to drive at normal highway speeds (say, up to 70mph)?

There's no limit in 4wd but there is a shift limit (info in the manual). However, all 4wd is going to do is get you going. It isn't going to save you from a high speed slide.

Also if you have the grip to go 70mph then probably not good for the drivetrain being locked in 4wd. You want some slip when locked into 4wd since when you turn the wheels go at different speeds. AWD vehicles( also limited) are better for this situation.

If conditions are good enough to allow you go 70 mph, then it’s probably not wet or slippery enough to warrant engaging 4WD in the first place. Not aware of any particular speed limit though.

Shifting into 4hi should be done at speeds below 55mph. The manual doesn't specify a max speed but if you are going over 60mph then 4H is probably not necessary.

But if you are in 4WH, its dry and you have a TRD oil filter installed you can do block long smoky 4 wheel burnouts.

I’ve driven a lot at 50-55mph in 4H.

The computer won’t let you shift if you’re going too fast.

Got it. I was never able to go more than ~55mph, and rarely more than 40mph. I was just curious if there was a limit.

I never recall "In the Manual" seeing a Max Speed for 4H. Only speed one can shift into 4H!

There's no max speed for driving in 4Hi in a part-time 4wd system, but as mentioned you don't want to try to shift INTO 4Hi above a certain speed as detailed in your Owners Manual.

My TRD ORP has the same part-time VF2A transfer case that my old '97 4Runner had. In the old '97 I ran it to the vehicles top speed on the Bonneville Salt Flats every year for 20+ years. With the wheelslip, drivetrain friction, and altitude combining to slow it down, it's top speed was just over 100 mph. The 3rd gen was governed to 106 mph by Toyota, and under good conditions and in stock configuration, it could achieve that.

While the 5th gen has more power, I assume it likely is also governed to around the same speed, due to tire limitations.

If I needed 4Hi on a paved highway, I wouldn't be driving fast.

As to its speed, I think it has a speed limiter and a rpm limiter on our 5th gens.
