TRD or aFe intake?

The 12586 isn't that loud. Its quiet enough at cruising speeds, and its got a nice little groan when you start to get on it, then the sound of the motor (now the intake) drowns it out after the RPMs get on up there. I want louder, but thats just my taste. If you want more growl, and not rediculously loud, go with the 12586

hoping to pull the trigger one way or the other today. if anyone has any more input, please chime in. if not, thanks to all those who've done so already.

Noob here

I also have been torn between the two intakes, but I have decided to just stay with TRD. Now that I have decided to go with TRD, people are telling me that I need a new exhaust. Do I need a 22" Magnaflow to replace my stock? What is the advantage in having one? Can I just replace the intake without changing the exhaust?

Thanks for the help. I'm a noob.:driving::driving:

you can certainly just do the intake without replacing the muffler. nothing wrong with that. but many folks replace the muffler at the same time; more air in, more air out, is the rationale. and if you just replace the muffler (not a full cat-back exhaust) it's a cheap performance mod.

is your TRD in yet?

TRD Intake

I still have it in the box. It will be in this weekend. I will post pics with the update. It just seems that you are all going with magnaflow and its a $700 upgrade. If you guys have other alternatives, shoot it my way. Thanks.

The link in my signature is a 40-60 mph run up with a magnaflow 12586 and TRD Intake installed if you were wondering what it sounded like. I am totally happy with it. Gained about 2 mpg avg and have put about 10k miles on this set up.

the magnaflow muffler is only ~$100. install ~$50 depending on the shop. i think the $700 you're quoting is a full catback exhaust system, which is overkill IMHO. just my opinion.

that's awesome. thanks very much for posting that.

$100

Oh wow. Ok, include that in future upgrades. I'm getting the magnaflow exhaust. Count me in. Thanks for the help guys.

For the muffler, I bought mine from Amazon. I found the best price from them, and ended up paying like 90 with two day shipping with my month trial of Amazon Prime.

Install was done for right at 50 from an off the beaten path muffler shop.

Yup. Got the magnaflow through amazon. Signed up for their credit card for another $30 off. Total was $61.xx with free shipping. I did paid $75 for install though.

Magnaflow 12586

Well, I went price hunting and found it for $77.72 on ebay. I should do the installation myself to save money as well... ughh. I dont feel like cutting anything. Blah.. but it saves me money.. wish me luck..:reddance::reddance::reddance:

I don;t know too much about exhausts, but it seems like I have more mods to add onto my list now. The price difference of a AFE intake vs a TRD one is enough to add the magnaflow muffler. :D By the way xguyx, I found the store on ebay thats selling them! Thanks for the heads up.

Also, with the new muffler added in, I could just have the shop add a curved exhaust pipe to reduce the sulfur smell???? Hmmmm.....

Anyone know the differences between the Stage 2 and Stage 2 SI intakes from aFe? Also what type of package filter are you guys getting?

Yeah I bought mine off of eBay as well. eBay and Amazon are both awesome.

:bigok:

I installed the aFe late this afternoon and have the following comments regarding the installation should you decide to do it yourself. The quality of the components is excellent and the fit is almost perfect. For a person who is mechanically inclined, who has basic metric tools, and who can follow directions, the installation is straight-forward. The pictures are good, but they didn't perfectly match my stock Trail Edition. Thus, if you want to do a self install and have no idea what you are doing, there is some room for error. I found that there were some extra plastic brackets holding wiring looms that were not mentioned and electrical tape or zip ties had to be cut to extract the stock components that needed to be replaced with the aFe parts. This was no big deal, but as it wasn't mentioned in the directions, it could prove to be frustrating for certain people. I didn't get a chance to test it out yet, but I hope to over the next several days and I will post my comments.

Cheers,
Greg

My initial impression of the aFe is that it definitely improves the engine sound with a much more distinct and deep thrum with acceleration--which is what you should get IMO from a truck to begin with. I will need to see if there is a notable difference in anything else over time.

Greg

i'm sure i'm not the only member asking this question... thinking to replace my muffler with a magnaflow and upgrade the intake too. would love to hear from folks running the TRD and the new aFe CAIs. pros... cons... worth it? would you do it again?

i still have 18 months of warranty left, so the "manufacturer approved" aspect of the TRD has its appeal. plus it seems like my aFe Pro Dry filter (stock) will fit in the TRD unit.

then again, the aFe is a bit less $ and it seems like the install is a little easier?

thanks for any and all input.

I have the TRD and wouldn't do it again. I've noticed NO gain for the price, but did gain an annoying whistle.

I definitely wouldn't call the sound with the aFe a "whistle" as it is a deep throaty sound that conjures up a sense of greater engine performance. I wouldn't think any other modifications focused on improving the sound quality would be needed after this one. I don't notice a clear improvement in acceleration, but the improved sound makes it seem like the engine is performing at a higher level. As far as fuel economy, I will need some time to go through a few tanks of gas to see if there is a difference.

Cheers,
Greg

I went to the Offroad Expo in Pomona yesterday and met some of the guys from aFe at their booth. I asked about the difference between the TRD cold air intake and the one marketed under their own aFe name. I was told that other than for the looks, they were essentially identical in performance. The guy also told me that aFe was producing the TRD units initially, but now they lost the contract and TRD is having them made elsewhere. Based on that, I'm happy I went with the aFE-branded CAI as it was certainly cheaper and I could care less about having something say "TRD" on it anyway. I also like the idea of 3 choices for filters that you get with the aFe--I picked up a spare filter at the show for a show price so I could try out the oil-free paper filter as well. I would be curious if the current TRD units are made to the same specs as they were initially--if they are trying to cut costs, that probably means having them made at a sweatshop in China where the workmanship and quality control might be less than optimal.

Cheers,
Greg
