Canadian 2016 4Runner Trail

Picked up a new '16 4Runner Trail last week. Here in B.C., Canada they seem to come with all the goodies; sun roof, nav, running boards, off road floor mats, heated power seats, etc. Plus it was the sales manager's personal demo and he had the a/t tires replaced with beefy Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs. It only had 1300 km, about 800 mi, on it, the price was right and we got a good trade on our '15 Wrangler. We are happy! - Ted'n Betty

Hi Everybody,

One of the things that nearly kept me from buying a '16 TRD Pro was the lack of a sunroof. I'm a big fan of having the roof open and the rear window rolled down, just makes for a great environment. Before I even drove it home, I had the guys at Lombard Toyota (IL) install one, and I must say that it looks and operates really, really well. Ran me about $1200 and is worth every penny in my opinion. Might be the only '16 TRD with a sunroof out there. Anyone else put one in?

With 2019 being announced and still no factory sunroof option I might just be looking at doing aftermarket install on 2018 TRD Pro. How is yours holding up after the year and change? any wind noise or leak issues? I'm also curious how they redid your headliner. Local shop says impossible to retain rigid headliner when putting these aftermarket roofs in and that they have to replace with soft floating material to match factory headliner. Also curious how the protected the cut metal edge on the roof metal and whether they ran into any support cross beams that would have effected rigidity of the vehicle, etc.

Mine has been great. No leaks, no noise and no malfunctions of any kind. I use it a lot too. The shop that did mine had no issues with any of your concerns. The headliner is taut and perfectly matches the original. The sunroof is a Classic Soft Trim branded unit with a Signature Automotive Products branded switch. Classic Soft Trim has an installation center in Tukwila, WA if you're still in the Seattle area. No doubt they will point you in the right direction...425-277-9000 is the Tukwila number and their HQ number is 800-460-0640

Sorry for delayed response and thanks for the Info. Just to be specific, when you say "taut" does that mean that you headliner is rigid as it was before or just tightly stretched matching fabric? Your number for Tukwilla Classic Soft Trim is actually "Auto Trim Design" and is the same local shop I refer to above who told me the rigid OEM headliner would be replaced with floating stretched matching material.

R/E the Maple Leaf connection, I posted in another thread about the Canada angle. Basically Toyota only lets Canadian dealers sell to Canadian citizens which is fine because I actually have family up there but I estimated import taxes and licensing requirements (including replacing the entire instrument cluster from primary clicks to MPH all make it not worthwhile - that's even assuming I could get one because the Canadian dealerships seem to get more anemic allocation of pros than our US dealers. So yeah, I tried.

Before I got the Pro I had a '16 Limited and in comparison, the Limited sunshade panel is more rigid than the aftermarket sunshade. That being said, the aftermarket sunshade, while noticeably more flexible due to it being a thinner base material, functions just as well as the OEM unit and looks 99% the part. It stays in position, it doesn't rattle and the liner material color matches and is stretched nicely. IMO, one would have to have some major OCD to take issue with it. I agonized over the decision for the same reasons as yourself, but I'm happy that I did it. No Ragrets.

personally I don't care about the sunshade because mine is rarely if ever shut on my 06 sport (I like lots of natural light!). I do however care about the actual headliner which I am not sure I am communicating it clearly but this is the inner ceiling of the rig around the perimieter of the whole sunroof opening.

On my 06' the headliner is rigid like upholstered board stalk so when you push on it, there is no give. The guy at the shop said that is impossible to reproduce aftermarket so they cover up the sunroof assembly once bonded to the metal roof with a stretched but "free floating" material to match the OEM headliner but that material would be soft and "give" when you push on it. I would be concerned that over time is stretched and becomes loose or jiggles as the car vibrates. Obviously yours doesn't do this, but can you confirm the ceiling of the rig on the inside around the perimeter of your sunroof is rigid to the touch or soft like you can push it up with a finger? If yours is in fact rigid like OEM then I really want to know more about who installed it so I can find out how they did that and get the same procedure.

Thanks and sorry to belabor this, just want to understand exactly how they did it. A picture of that would also be awesome if its not too much trouble.

Mine was installed by Classic Soft Trim in Villa Park, IL (630) 833-0129...give em a shout, perhaps they can help you out better than I can. I'll also try to get you a picture when I can. Good luck Bud.

I too have a 16' Super White I got from St. Charles (IL) Toyota.
Thinking of having a local auto place install same brand/type of sunroof. Really miss having one. Had one in my Hummer H2, that I sold to get the TRD-P.

I had an aftermarket one installed in my 2018 Pro when I bought it new and it is covered by the 3/36k factory warranty per dealer paperwork. Two years old now. No issues. Had a factory one on my 2001 4Runner, which I had for almost 18 years and no issues.
