TRD supercharger question

All the "guts" of superchargers are made by companies like Magnussen, Whipple, Eaton, etc. But TRD designed the pulley size, output, PSI, etc. to be specifically made for a 5VZ-FE engine.



Saying that the TRD supercharger was not designed by Toyota but by Magnussen is like saying that the 4Runner wasn't designed by Toyota but DENSO because it has DENSO parts in it.



Exactly. Companies design it and have others out the compatible parts. That's why macpherson front struts are the most common in cars. They meet the manufacturer specs

They run lean. At higher elevations you may be "ok."

Just about any N/A car or truck, and modern ECU, converted to FI is going to run lean.

This engine wasn't built for FI. Therefore it's tuned from the factory to be NA. The fuel system and ECU were not meant for FI.

Can you fun it without mods? Yes.

Is it going to run lean? Yes.

TRD used to produce their own 7th injector and larger pulley, for this very reason.

Why would they not sell all chargers then with the 7th injector and a different pulley in the first place? Wasn't that the reason they went with the stock pulley diameter with the set amount of boost? You would think they take into account the sea level numbers because that's the most amount of boost your going to see, your maximum.

Because I'm a noob in all of this, running any amount of lean going to damage the engine over time? Is there any acceptable amount that will do no difference to the longevity of the engine? Are we saying that they built something to eventually ruin your engine? I'm really curious as to how they came to something acceptable, but still fell short with all the development and research. Like I said, I'm purely speculating on this and intrigued by the discussion.

Anyone know if you voided the warranty by installing a supercharger from the dealership? If warranted, was it a requirement to add fuel mods?
 
I'm planning to buy a super charger for my 3rd gen and I've come across a dilemma. From videos I've seen and threads I've read, I found that you can slap on a super charger on the stock fuel system without needing any type of tune or fuel system like the urd 7th injector.

I was wondering if anyone has this, just a stock 3.4 with a super charger and the stock fuel system. I'm in the Bay Area do elevation isn't much of a problem but I'm hoping that if I can run my stock 3.4 on a super charger, then I'll buy it asap and later on do the urd 7th injector.

Can anyone help me out? Who's got a stock 3rd gen with a super charger?

P.S preferably the 2nd gen super charger lol

I have a 1st gen TRD supercharger...installed with no fuel mods.
I DO have a check engine light for "SYSTEM TOO LEAN"

Just read some of the responses, my supercharger has been on for over 100,000 miles with no fuel mods, others have 140,000+ with no fuel mods. Brand new Chevy engines don't even last that long with no forced induction :)

From URD's website: "URD SuperGrip pulleys for the 5vz TRD Supercharger require proper fueling and tuning." You can't really add more boost without adding more fuel, it's not really designed to run that way, even at higher elevations. Plus if you ever drove down to lower altitudes your engine is really going to act up. 100% sure that will go away once you add the fuel mods, since the 2.1 pulley is much smaller than stock.

I completely understand your thinking on this. I was in the same boat. I wanted a SC, but didn't want to pay for the fuel mods. I read tons of threads on the topic and decided just to get the SC with no intention of fuel upgrades.

On the first test drive after the install I heard the pinging. Since then I have installed an AEM meth kit and URD O2 calibrator. Now I have zero ping. I was not going to have my engine run lean and experience detonation, as it is my daily driver. I wish I would have listened and purchased the fuel mods to begin with.

I believe Toyota knows that the SC causes the engine to run lean. Maybe they know that the engine can handle it or the problem is not that serious. It's not like your engine is going to blow up (knock on wood) at that amount of boost. It's just not good for the motor.

TRD nor Toyota designed the Supercharger get your facts straight. sure they worked with Magnuson to make a correct kit for the truck but that is about it. your argument is invalid. if toyota or TRD Developed the S/C then why did it not come on the truck from the factory but only as a dealer installed option? and you do realize that TRD is toyotas Aftermarket parts/Racing division right?they private label and sub contract other companies to make them parts. TRD Big Brake kit made by TRD? nope Stoptech. TRD Wheels made by TRD? nope Various manufacturers Racing Hart used to be one of them. so before you tell someone that has been working in this industry for over 15 years hes wrong check your facts.
