Treadwright tires

Hey all, looking to get a new set of tires as mine are getting close to done. I've done hours and hours of searching and reading threads and reviews but can't decide what to do. here are the options I am looking at:

4 265 70 17 TW Warden A/T https://www.treadwright.com/p-64-265-70r17-warden-a-t-e.aspx for about 650 delivered, mounted and balanced

or...

4 265 70 17 BFG T/A KO from discount tire mounted/balanced with a lifetime warranty/road hazzard for 1,217.24 http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/findTireDetail.do?r=OKOINT|pc|73160&pc=38979&ar=70&rd=17&cs=265

My main concerns about the TW are the balancing issues people have had and not being able to have the road hazzard/lifetime warranty. I'm not so concerned with the tread coming off or tires blowing out. I'm pretty set on the T/A KO style as I have had these on a lot of my past vehicles and liked them a lot. My 4runner will not see a lot of off road, but every once in a while.

Like I said, I'm not concerned that it is a re-tread other than the balancing issues and warranty issues, just looking for peoples opinions. anyone with experience with TW please chime in also and let me know how they are doing with some miles on them as a lot of the reviews I have found are from people that just got the tires. thanks!

Edit: forgot to mention, stock 2006 SR5 with stock rims, in future only looking to do a leveling kit/wheel spacers. nothing serious :)

My view on recaps is that everyone loves them until they have a problem. I personally wouldn't take the chance. Don't go cheap with tires, brakes, or steering parts.
 
I have the treadwright 255/75/17's and I really like them. Mine are more the mud terrain and I bought 5 shipped for about 650. So, I have a nice full size spare ready to go just in case. With that said they are a little heavier than a normal tire so my mileage dropped a mpg or so. But for the price mine are freaking amazing in snow and mud. I try to offroad as much as possible but my tread pattern is a bit noisy on road. I would do it again though I would probably change to the t/a ko pattern if I would do it again for a bit better on road handling. I knew what I was getting into with a mud terrain and again they go through everything great! No issues so far and i probably have 10k on mine. Drove across country and they balanced up nice. The rubber is actually factory balanced by treadwright...so they need almost no weight on them.
 
thanks for the review! I would like to know the date on the sidewalls on the ones that blew out from the review of the guy in your thread. they were also the mud terrain style and probably used offroad a lot more than I would. do you have any pictures of what the tread is like now? also do you know the year of your sidewalls? it is in one of the numbers on it, just look for a number that looks like a date lol. thanks for all the help!
 
I'll check tomorrow...mine are bfg mud terrain sidewalls. I'll take a look at the numbers but they looked brand new. They were sold out online i called them up and they had 5 in stock.

standby...will do. and I just went back to that thread to see if the member who posted those pics was active.....he is not. joined in march, posted twice and has not been active since 4 days after he posted. without any additional details besides the carnage pics posted, kinda loses credibility.

If you must go cheap and by re treads def look at the date on the carcass they used. I am willing to bet they're over 3 years old and that's pushing it IMO. Tire shops aren't even allowed to sell tires that have been on the shelf 3-5 years idk how retread companies get away with it.

Like someone else here said never skimp out in tires, steering or brakes. What is the only part of your vehicle that keeps you in contact with the road and in control? The tires... go with BFG
 
as promised...went out and got some pics. 117,600 miles on the truck now, so that's 25k on the tires so far (my wife had a hour ride to work 4 days a week).

right front tire, turned to get a good view of the trad. rotated these once since putting them on.

I believe the number we need to date them is going to be after the DOT. It should say "DOT #### XXX####"

Where # is a number and X is a letter, the date is the numbers after the X (not the numbers after DOT) on my BFGs the number is 4111, that's the 41st week of 2011.

That's odd, maybe someone who knows more than me can chime in about the two tires with only two numbers.

It sounds like the carcasses for the other two were just under 5 years old when they sold them to you.
 
thanks so much for the pictures and replies! I called Treadwright today and asked about dates. not impressed with their customer service. both people I talked to on the phone didn't really know what to tell me and didn't help much, and honestly kind of rude. I asked if they could do something like sidewalls from 08' plus and they told me it could take 6-7 months to get them in. I don't think I want to get 5 year old sidewalls to put on my truck. they even told me that they have no limit on how far they go back in years, they just make sure they have no cracks and are in "good condition"

having said all that, I think I am going to go with the BFG tires. just feels safer with the hazzard warranty and knowing that they are all brand new. plus discount tire does lifetime balancing and rotation, so not bad. :) should be getting them soon with some 1.5 all pro spacers, and hopefully some sort of leveling kit.

That would scare me away. They look like a small time type company. There is probalby a reason you don't see the major tire companies do this work on passenger car tires like they do for big trucks.
 
Seems there are a lot with positive things to say about TWs. Shopping around for tires for my third gen, and was weighing used new BFGs versus TreadWrights... in the Jeep community, it seems that there is a much greater acceptance of TW. But after seeing the rogue picture of the tire failure from the two-poster on the other forum, I'm thinking twice.

I have to say, my initial big worry was about blow outs, then about them balancing ok, but now my big worry is that you are bonding new rubber with approximately ~5 year old carcasses that have been through thousands of heat cycles. That means that the rubber has hardened, which could potentially lead to bonding issues. I've seen the videos they have on YouTube, and it is good to see how they lop off the tread to get to fresh rubber to bond to. But it seems chancy. But even a three year old carcass would have seen thousands of these heat cycles. In my mind, it's like welding fresh aluminum onto a stressed component made of aluminum... You may be creating stress in the material that could effect the durability of the part.

The tire size I'm looking for is about $110 a tire, with about $120 in shipping (getting five). Brand new, they are about $200 a tire, with similar shipping costs. On one hand, you save about $450. On the other hand, my wife and child are in the truck with me. Hate to say it, but what at first sounded like a great and noble idea is turning not a chance that's just not worth taking for me.

Just so it's said, I'm trying to trash talk the product. I'd rather see fewer tires go into land fills. But I would exercise caution... I don't want to be way out in the middle of nowhere and question if these things are safe.

I was thinking of trying treadwrights for my next set of tires but I have 3 kids so after reading these threads I'm out on the idea. I have a good friend that I work with and she put 35" treadwrights on her 2010 power wagon. They balance out fine and she drives to Denver a lot on them (4 hours). She was the one who got me thinking about buying them. Last time I talked to her about it she said she was at about 10k miles and loved them. I drive a lot of highway miles so it's not worth the chance of having a blowout at 75+ mph with kids in the truck. Seems viable for more of an off-road vehicle.
 
After my neighbor having balancing for 2 sets I decided to pass on the TW's. the potentional issues didn't outweigh the cost savings.
