There are areas where cutting corners makes sense but tires aren't one of those areas.

Around here, at least, Discount Tire seems to have the best prices. I was OTD for about $780 for the Hankook Dynapro ATs I put on my 3rd gen. 265/75/16s. IIRC the base price was right around $159/tire. I guess you can get TW's for maybe $110 or even $120, but you still have to get them shipped, balanced and installed. Then there's the fact that you can get your tires rotated/flats fixed for free at any Discount Tire in the country if you go with their tires - to me it's just not worth it to save - what, $250? Maybe $350?

To put it another way, if your tires are rated for 50,000 miles and people drive an average of 15,000 miles/year, running new tires vs. TW's will increase your costs by maybe $100/year or $8.33/month. Call it $10/month to be generous. I think I'd gladly pay $10/month more to know I'm riding on new tires vs. retreads. ;):
 
It still amazes me that people put money over safety. I wonder if they would buy re-glued brake pads made by some mom and pop shop just becuase they were cheaper. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. There is a reason they are cheap. My money will always go to new tires.
 
The casing's age is what would bother me. I only put about 4000 miles a year on my truck so tires aren't a huge issue for me but new ones are a must since I'll replace my tires due to age before I wear them out.
