Truck-Bedz, yay or nay?

as an alternative to the rear cargo deck/sleep platform (with sliding drawers), what is the consensus on the Truck-Bedz inflatable air mattress for the rear cargo area of our beloved Gen3 4Runners?

(yeah, I know, it's a 1st Gen)

further, in conjunction with that inflatable air mattress, what is the consensus on the SUV tent?

I sleep in my 4runner a lot. I just use a nice inflatable backpacking mat. 2 fit side by side between the fender wells just fine.

the local Cabelas has the Truck Bedz inflatable air mattress on sale for $60... I may go see whether I can talk the store manager into letting one of their employees accompany me out to my '96 4Runner to test fit it before I decide whether to actually purchase it...

Biggest advantage to a sleeping platform is the storage you can create underneath it. While that looks comfortable, how long will it take to empty out the truck (and where are you putting it all?) to set up for the night? That was the biggest pain for me when I started planning my sleeping platform project. I'm sure we will still have some time morning and night to unpack/repack everything, but hopefully it goes quicker than it did with out it.

Ideally you would combine both options so you gain storage under it, and the comfort of the air mattress, then you just have to worry about being too tall.

those exact sentiments echo my same reservations as well; but how much clearance/headroom is there actually with an air mattress atop a sleep platform (with sliding drawer storage space beneath)?

The other thing to consider is where/when you are planning on using it. I'm by no means a world traveler, but in my researching i've seen several people comment about how much colder the air mattress is vs foam. Probably a good thing to have that air circulate under you on a hot summer night. For the winter months probably not the best bet.

I had one for my 1st gen and loved it (was actually one for a 2nd gen truck, turned 180 degrees it fit perfectly.) For my 3rd gen I have just been using a regular air mattress between the wheel wells.. I like the added 4 storage pockets it leaves... Since the truck bed conformed to the vehicles shape, it left little to no space to put stuff beside you.

They are great products though. Never had an issue with mine.

I've thought about getting one of those. Would be a little more comfy than just the pad and sleeping bag I've been using.

My wife and I sleep comfortably in the back of the runner just using 2 small backpacking mattresses. I prefer 2 small mattresses to one large one because you don't bounce your partner around whenever you move or get up to pee. You need to take out the rear seat bottoms to make enough room though (we're both 5'8").

I've also seen folks make a sleeping platform that sits above the wheel wells so the whole area is flat, but that cuts into head room too much for my tastes.

About the head clearance. Does the 4th Gen have more head room than the 3rd Gen? Otherwise, I am thinking of building a raised platform that would clear the wheel wells, and allow storage underneath for less moving stuff in and out each night and morning.
