Truck won't move forward in drive without throttle

Picked up a 2001 with 8 billion miles. Runs great, drives great.

However, when in drive and foot off the brake, the truck will not roll forward.

So far I've changed air filter, cleaned MAF (PO ran K&N and it was filthy), replaced cracked intake hose, and checked for dragging brakes. Idle is 750 in park, and 625 rpm in drive. Transmission fluid is right at the full mark.

In preparation for a hopeful fix this weekend, I was hoping you all could help me compile a list of things to check. I do have TechStream, so if that will help diagnose, just let me know.

How did you check if the brakes are binding?

I would jack up one corner at a time and make sure each wheel spins freely. If they all spins freely, than I would guess it has to be something with the tranny.

Just like that, with a floor jack.

I am wondering if your issue is with the brakes disengaging at a slow/lazy rate. So holding the breaks compressed for full 3 min and then release the brakes one of them maybe taking a little bit longer than normal to retract back. Lube the caliper pins after a good cleaning could be a improvement before replacing everything...

if your are not getting the creep when in gear could be the torque converter but seems as though the brakes are hanging up. when checking for brake bind did you pump the brakes before you spun the wheels.

I dun git it ....

I was under the impression this was like an April fools thing?

because you said runs and drives great but were not able to actually move that kind of threw me into this is making fun of those who jump into a high mileage 3rd gen's who have no real auto maintenance mojo. especially since you have quite a bit of that mojo. sorry.

So this is a real question.

so yea that would be some substantial drag. I guess I would put it up in the air on 4 jack stands and see what happens when I put it in gear. this way you could be out of the truck and even try and spin things. obviously be careful dam it.

there is a min pressure when in D position, there is a test plug on the trans, but I think it's a special SST thing.

wondering about reverse? would help twiddle it down just a bit. forward clutch or shift solenoid valve not closing.

I would also check it in first and reverse. I have a feeling this is more a transmission issue than anything else. Might think about replacing all the transmission fluid with something you trust

Curious as to why you said "8 billion" instead of actual mileage.
That is an interesting "problem", but if it has 3-400k miles, it's gone far past what many '01/02 trans last.
You said is drives fine, but are the shifts firm like they should be? Definitely sounds like a pressure issue to me, but I'm no auto trans expert. '01/02 are known to have torque converter issues.

295k. Shifts feel fine. What specific issues should I look for?

I'm thinking if it shifts well (firm, not Hard and no slipping) and otherwise drives well with clean/decent trans fluid, just drive it.

I don't buy into the generalizations 01-02s are more poorly designed/built than earlier models, my Luck, so far, has not shown that, gulp....

All vehicles have problems, just depends on how we deal with them. :cowboy:

I like that advice! I'll do a drain/fill tonight, mostly to check inside pan for shavings.

The bright side is even if the trans is roasted, replacements are cheap and plenty :)

Check your e-brake, at the drum, they rust up and bind the rear wheels preventing the vehicle from creeping forward.

Yeah, I'd check the fluid. I'd imagine the 01-02 tranny is relatively cheap, but still not as cheap as the 96-00. These years seem to get torque converter or planetary gear failures more often, and around here they sell out at junkyards quickly. My thinking is not that they aren't poorly designed, but rather they just don't hold up to neglect as well as a 96-00 trans.

He says the level is ok. But it's so hard getting the dipstick in and it sometimes messes up the readings. I really just go by draining it. If the level is ok you will drain 1 gallon out.
