I get wanting the latest year available but as noted, 4th Gens in general are often tough to find. We looked for a solid year in metro Atlanta with nothing more on our must-have list than 4WD and a sunroof. No luck. Driving home from an Outer Banks vacation, we resorted to true shot-in-the-dark tactics: calling the Toyota dealer(s) in every town along the way.
Miraculously, a dealer in Greenville, SC said they had just taken in a nice '07 Sport. Greenville was a half-hour or so out of our way but what the hey at that point, so we took a chance.
Their description wasn't quite accurate. The truck wasn't nice, it was mint, even at 96K miles, was the color I wanted and had everything I was looking for. Got back from the test drive only to find someone else was in the office buying it. We left feeling bummed but the other deal fell through so it was ours!
They were nice enough to transfer it at no charge to an affiliate dealer in metro Atlanta, where the sales guy said several people had stopped in and tried to buy it as soon as it came off the transporter and that's why it was so hard to find one here. In the meantime, I had checked the Toyota service records, Carfax, etc. and the news was all good. In the past I would never have considered a used vehicle with that mileage, but in the words of my mechanic after checking it over: "96K on a 4Runner? It's just getting started."
The only issue we ran into was that the 4WD actuator was locked up. The dealer installed a new one and 3 years/45K miles later, so far it's happily-ever-after.
It likes the Outer Banks too. ;-)
