Tundra brake upgrade wheel

Can anyone confirm if the 231 mm rotor upgrade will fit with this style of stock 16" wheels?

It will not bolt up without grinding some of the caliper for clearance.

I've seen this post before but all the picture links for the wheels are dead. But I guess none of the OEM wheel descriptions sound like my wheels.

Also, a pretty small spacer will work as well. 1/4 inch or so?

There is a bevel on the caliper that can be ground back to clear the center part of your wheel. Thats what I did to mine. However, the steel spare will not fit.

This is why I run the 199 mm Tundra calipers as they fit just fine Stock r 16 wheels. I can not confirm a steel spare r16. I would suspect it will but I haven't verified it.

I have the same wheels as you. I recently did the 199mm upgrade on my 96 and I was surprised when I was done they would not fit. It was really close. I was originally going to grind them but I have some new wheels I will be replacing the r16s with when I get my Runner back on the road so I didn't bother. I just bought some cheap 1/4 spacers for now and they cleared just fine.

Well that's very interesting. I'm not really interested in buying new wheels or running spacers. Maybe I'll just pass on the TBU since I've heard the improvement isn't necessarily a night and day difference.

Yeah I wasn't originally planning on doing the upgrade but when I went to replace my pads I found I had a seized caliper pin and I needed a new caliper. I found 199mm Callahan calipers for $125 on Amazon and I figured why not. Of course on the same day I finished the install I saw a new post about the Tundra upgrade and danwyl stated his didn't fit with his r16s. It was too late then lol. If I didn't have the wheels I would of would of tried to grind them because I wouldn't want to run spacers either. They are only on there while I finish working on the rear end.

I guess I'll probably just run the stock brakes for now and if I track down a nice set of compatible wheels, upgrade then. I'm not doing any towing with this rig or anything that would necessitate an upgrade but I just figured I'd do it if it was straightforward.

If you really look closely. The 199mm calipers are just slightly wider then stock . They use the same brake pads as stock. The 231mm calipers use a different backing plate that's longer and spaces the 4 pistons out further. Both Tundra brake calipers use the same think rotor.

The actual braking pad material on both is the same. The 231mm have more air spacing with the larger pad back plates. They will not fit r16 rims.

So the measurement is the brake pad . Hope this helps.

The water is getting muddier. I wonder if Napa would let me return them if I dry fit them and they didn't work with my wheels.

Just found a post on yotatech that says I'll have to trim the dust shields to fit the 199mm calipers because my rig came with 15" wheels from the factory.

Hey Brillo I took a couple of pics so you could see what I was dealing with. I am not sure maybe a different brand of caliper would of worked in 199 and this is unique to Callahan? There is a tab that sticks out that is just enough that it would not fit. With the 1/4 spacer I can get just the tip of my pinkie in there now. Granted it probably would not of taken much to grind it off.

Grinding the wheels isn't that hard, I did it as well. It's just a high point that needs to be flattened out. I had no issues with balancing as I took a uniform amount of aluminum off each spoke.
