turbo on a 3.0?

Hey Guys,

i was wondering if anyone has put a turbo on a 3.0? or even a supercharger? i tried searching the site and all i get is stories with turbo mufflers, or 22r type engines with turbo kits. I was wondering if anyone had tried a turbo on a 3.0 to help with their power issues.

Many people have turbo'd the 3vz, mainy MR2 guys. Does it help, sure. Especially if you get rid of that horrible factory crossover pipe.

Answer: My humble 3.0 cents worth, but the cost involved versus other options for power per dollar would (or should) lead you in the direction of junking the 3.0 for a V-8.
There's no substitute for cubic inches, and no replacement for displacement.
I've got an anemic 3 litre auto in my 94, and when I've squireled enough money away to not have to piece meal my project together, I'm going to find a wrecked Chev pickup, then I'll have a small block, auto, transfer case, axles, and everything else (senders, electronics, brackets, etc.) to do everything all at once.
Just my opinion and direction I'm headed

I agree that the 3.0 is not worth putting a turbo charger on with a 4runner. You run risks of ruining the internal engine parts that just aren't made for the extra power.

If you are looking to improve on the 3.slo, the 3.4 is an option.

Because anyone can just buy something, it takes ingenuity and knowledge to make something work that was never meant to. I grew up on V8's and i've been doing domestic conversions for a very long time. I like the sound and power a v8 makes. We all have our reasons for doing certain things. You want to know why?? well why not?

Doing a 3.4 swap i could say just go buy a third gen. or a tacoma. I may not like or agree with what people do to their rigs, and vise versa. I say go fourth and be bold, build the hell out of whatever you want, however you want. Heck, put twin turbo's on it and wastegate them both so they cant put out too much pressure then you would have a badass little 3.0l in my book.

One question I would have is durability--if the stock 3.0 regularly blows head gaskets, how much more of a problem would it be at even higher internal pressures?

It wasnt due to pressure it was the exhaust cross over pipe warping the heads over time.

Hey Nate! thanks for do'n the search for me! i hate wade'n through all the b.s. to find what i want. you saved me a ton of time! lmao!

but seriously, the reason i asked about the turbo or blower is because this is my wife's baby. It is also her introduction to the "project car lifestyle" she's not ready for engine swaps (like a v/8) that involve fabrication. She would however like for her runner to have better take off power. so i was wondering about use'n a tail pipe turbo system with the exhaust system upgraded over stock stuff.
