Turn Ignition While Pressing Gas Pedal

That's what my wife said she did this morning my mistake. It was in park, and she thought the gas pedal was the brake. I don't know what sound it made, but I'm sure it sounded terrible.

Anyway, would this have caused damage? I don't know enough about what can go wrong when things a person shouldn't do are done, since I generally try to do things correctly. At least she wasn't driving around town with the center differential locked.

Well, if the 3rd Gens had rev limiters on them, then I would say not to worry too much. Some of the noise she heard might be the PCM holding back the engine from over revving (red lining).

But if it doesn't...worst case is that some bearing damage may have been done since it was just starting up.

I would check for any unusual noises. If it were me and I knew there wasn't a rev limiter, I would change the oil and might have an oil analysis done to see what is in it.

Hahahaha I'm sure it's fine, you should just be lucky she's honest with you. My gf would be way too scared to tell me she did something like that to my car :boxer:

Ask her about some details, if they can be provided. Actually revving it that high isn't the problem, its revving it down quickly afterwards that can cause the most damage. If this is the case (which it probably is), then you should pay close attention to it over the next week or two. If there is a problem, it will complain... listen for problems and watch fuel consumption and temperature closely (if something is beaten up, your fuel economy will drop and your temperature will go up, even if the CEL does not turn on).

That said, don't freak out. You are probably just fine. THese engines can take plenty of abuse before they go belly up...

I debriefed her this afternoon, and it appears she was only moderately pressing on the gas, and that it probably didn't go into the red zone. Based on the sound report it was probably 3-5000. It seems that she let off after about a second. She knows it's my/our baby, and tells me just because she knows how much I stress about keeping it tip-top.
