turning noise on 4x4 mode

hey guys i got a 1989 gen 1 4runner. it runs well but the problem is when u engage 4x4 mode it makes a funny noise which sounds more course than cv's in a fwd car. is it the cv joints or is it just normal as i know someone whith a 1988 hilux with exactly the saqme problem but still manages to go off road.
any ideas?

It wouldn't say it's normal. Could be a CV joint, could also be a manual or auto hub if you have those.
