Turns over but won't start when hot, must sit for 30 min. before it starts

I have a 1988 4runner that started having problems starting a few months ago when it is hot. I checked and it seems that no power is going to the coil when this happens, funny thing is the AC and inside Fan stop working at the same time. When I let it sit for about 30 min I can tell when it's going to start as I leave the fan on and turn the key to accessory the fan comes on and the engine starts.
The problem seems to be getting worse as the wait time has gone from 15 min to 40 min... it doesn't happen all the time but seems to happen on longer trips then short runs... Any help would be appreciated.. Thanks/.Kevin

I have the same exact problem with my 4Runner. Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas on how to fix it? I have replaced the plugs and plug wires. Please help, this is my daily driver and it has been going on for a few months. I've noticed that it only happens on hot sunny days and usually after quick drives. When it happens I have to let it sit until after dark to let it cool and then it runs just like new. I can tell when it's going to start by turning the key to on and if the fan runs then it will start but if it doesn't then it won't start.

My problem continued getting worse until waiting for it to cool down no longer fixed the problem.. I ended up running a wire from the positive side of the battery through a toggle switch I installed in the dash then ran it to the positive side of the coil. Now I just turn on the switch and go.

I have to turn the toggle switch on to get power to the coil but then it starts and runs fine...you then turn off the toggle switch to turn the truck off. , that's what was wrong with my truck, it wasn't getting power to the coil, never could figure out what was causing the problem so I just bypassed it and ran power to the coil myself.

I know this might sound silly but my g/f has a 2000 volks beetle that runs great Till she had the A/C on then once in awhile after driving when she gos to start it .If the A/C is on it doesn't start the starter cranks but the engine doesn't
make sure the a/c is off and the fan then try

Another problem i hear with 4runners is the starter cable at the starter end ..you try and turn on and it clicks only no starter spinning Hope it helps

Meteorite, I had an issue w/ this on a different vehicle, turned out to be the connection in the TPS was getting hot and expanding and losing ground, then 30 min it would cool off and reconnect. Check it out.

Could you post pics of your setup? I may have to resort to bypassing like you did.

All you do is run a wire from the + side of the battery to a toggle switch then run it from the toggle switch to the + side of the coil.

I found the Problem !!!!!

After 2 years of searching I found my problem...There is a black 4 wire connector behind the drivers side headlight between the firewall and air cleaner box that was loose. As I drove it got hot/vibrated and loosened the connection, as the truck cooled it reconnected. All I had to do was wiggle it around and PROBLEM SOLVED.!!!!
