Two Problems

Good Morning everyone, I'm new to the forum but I have two issues for my 2001 Toyota 4Runner..

The first issue is I need to replace the spark wires. I have already bought a set of Bosch wires but the problem is I'm unsure how to replace them, by that I mean are the simple or very time consuming? I am mechanically inclined but replacing these seems like more work more removing parts just access the wires then anything? If someone could provide some insight I'd really appreciate it.

The second issue the light for my radio is totally burnt out. How do I go abotut replacing this? Or do I have to buy a whole new radio?

Any help on these issue would be great. Thanks

Running new wires from the distributor to the spark plugs??? Very easy.


As for the radio. Walk away. Sealed units and unless you just love tinkering, honestly not worth it.

I agree on the radio...get a new one. My light blinks on and off sometimes. Its hard to get used to where the buttons are when it is dark and when driving. I did take it apart but after getting into I discovered its not worth pursuing any further. I will replace mine at some point but it doesn't hold the highest priority right now.
As far as the first problem...make sure to replace them one at a time. That way there is no confusion on which goes to where.

IF you are able to return the wires, you may want to get some OEM Denso or NGK wires. Our 4runners like them a lot better. If not, they will probably do just fine anyway.

I got an $80 Sony Radio from Wally World and it was easy to install.

The wires should be easy.

I wouldn't touch the radio. Buy a new one. Or better yet, I'm going to replace the premium OEM unit in my daughter's Limited after her birthday on 12/22. If you want, I could sell you the takeout unit at a good price. It has CD and cassette. I bought a nice unit from Crutchfield that will fit perfectly with no modifications and it will add iPod connectivity. And the lights on it are adjustable to match the other vehicle lighting. $199.99 shipped with no tax and they include a wiring harness and instructions.

3rd gen 4runners don't have distributors. But it's still easy to change the wires.

Bosch wires and plugs don't do well in many of our trucks. I know 1st hand. And why are you only replacing the wires? What about the plugs too?

I had Bosch wires and after a year, I decided to look under my hood at night with the engine running. I looked like an electrical storm under there because the shielding on the Bosch wires was so thin and it was even breaking in places. I've also fried a Bosch plug in my motor. Stick with Denso or NGK only!

Agree wires and plugs are easy. I did mine a few months ago using one of the tutorials as reference. Very easy
