popping, creaking, squeaking... pretty much any annoying noise can point to u-joints. if they sounds like chirping birds try greasing them to kick the can down the road so to speak, worked for me. you can get under there and rotate the drive shaft(s) to feel for slop also.
 
what about

a annoying vibration that started a week ago only at 55+ mph, but now its at 30mph....almost like a zipping feeling, rock on tire or something.

That's actually fairly common with age in our trucks. Mine did that at about 150,000 and I had to replace the driveshaft. You can try just replacing the U joint, but if the end of the driveshaft is also worn out/damaged, then doing just the joint won't take care of it. After I did mine, I started noticing other 3rd gens on the side of the highway with their driveshafts hanging down onto the road.
