Uncomon shock spring combo

Howdy guys,

Here's a quick one for you gurus. Haven't seen much on the subject.

Can I use stock 3rd gen coils on stock 1st gen tundra shocks? This is for the front. I can get a pretty good deal on a set. I don't necessarily need a lift especially with the alignment complications and the usual itch to get bigger tires.

I know I can use the whole assembly from the tundra but I don't really think I need the 2.5" lift it will give me up front.

Good deal. Thanks for the response jklmc. You don't have any idea if I'd be asking for a shitty ride with that setup do you? Putting a shorter coil on a strut designed for a longer coil? I understand this is a pretty out there question and not very sought after over here in lift and big tires land.

Lots of people use the tundra struts, depending what perch it's set on how much lift you'll get. First perch is .85 inch, second is 1 and some change, 3rd is about 2.5 I think. It's pretty well covered, but check some of the build threads.

Jstim, I was unaware that the factory struts came with the perch settings. Is this the case? I am pretty green to all of this suspension stuff, but I was under the impression the Bilstein tundra struts were adjustable and the stock factory were stationary in their placement. For what it is worth, this is what they look like. Off of a 2003

I have definitely looked that one over quite a few times as well as scouring the rest of the forums. The catch is that I'm not using the TRD coils as noted by the markings on the ones in the pic. That's really where I got hung up, I'm sure it would still work. But would probably net me some sort of lift if I just bolted those ones on (being the non TRD coils from the picture). That's where I was thinking I could swap my 3rd gen coils on those struts to get struts that are supposedly in good shape and still keep my ride height. Unless I am missing something, and it is very possible I am, it hasn't really been covered in any of the lift or build threads that I could find.

If I am doing a botch job explaining this I apologize. Thank you for the help thus far.

Your coils are shorter than the stock Tundra coils. I'm not sure why you would even consider this combination. There isn't any good reason to try to mix and match the two. If you want the same ride height, why even bother swapping parts out that aren't going to change it?

I'm considering it because I can get these hardly used tundra struts for a good price. My front struts are probably toast at 190K. My reasoning would be to essentially get two new struts and reuse my coils. I'm not exactly sure about your last sentence, but I do want the same ride height. That is why I do not want to use the tundra coils.

If you want the same ride height, why even bother swapping parts out that aren't going to change it?

I understand the great price thing, but the bottom line is they aren't meant to be used with coils that are shorter than the Tundra coils. A good price doesn't make it a good idea.

The last sentence you didn't understand was the result of not knowing that you're assuming the existing shocks are worn out.
