Tell us more about what year it is? Is there anything broken / wrong with the frame other than the rust?

I am not sure I would do anything more to the vehicle, but that is not to say that it may not last for a number of years in its current condition (but I am no expert).

As for trading it, I guess you have to consider what you could get for it on trade and your overall finances for affording another vehicle.

If going with a new vehicle, consider having it undercoated prior to a Chicago winter.
 
mine pretty much looks like that underneath.

Mine might actually be a bit worse really. My fuel tank and front skids are no longer on my truck because they rotted off. The fuel tank strap rotted off as well as my OEM muffler. My rear bumper is starting to perforate as well. My Rocker panels are completely shot (thank God for the Limited cladding that hides it).

It's really still not that bad though as none of that was critical. I just routinely inspect the rear diff pumpkin for possible leaks as well as the frame on both sides at the rear lower control arm mounts. I try to keep that area clean and I routinely shoot some Rust Check (Green) pretty much everywhere I can just to slow down rust progression.

It all depends what your plans are for your rig. If you're trying to "build" it, it won't be worth dumping money into it, especially since anything you do might lead to the proverbial opening of a can of worms.

But, if you simply intend on driving it... just fix what breaks or needs replacing until the frame is too far gone or until a major repair pops up (transmission, blown head gasket, etc.).

But as mentioned above, giving us more detail on the overall condition of your truck will help. Year, mileage, what have you repaired or replaced so far? Is it otherwise giving you problems?
 
Can you drive it? Yeah probably. But honestly, I'd never buy a car that looks like that. It's cancer that has already spread and no way in stopping it. Sorry.

Take a hammer and bang around the rear control mounts, upper shock mounts and around the whole frame. Make sure it's solid. And no weak spots.

Spraying the undercarriage wouldn't do anything now.
 
I've seen worse, and I've seen worse fixed. I personally wouldn't want to fix it though. I would take a screw driver and start poking around. Focus especially on where the rear lower control arms mount to the frame.

If you decide to fix it I would recommend a needle scaler and lots of por-15.

I've seen much worse. It all looks fixable, just lots of work. All depends on the condition of the frame, you can't see that from the videos. You might need a "new" axle from the junkyard or weld on a new pumpkin cover.

It’s a 99 Limited with 136k.
I’ve only replaced the rear shocks and tires.

Think I’ll trade it tomorrow. The truck I found is completely under coated and the $$ I spend would have been spent on this.
I just hate it because I love the way it rides.

Was just gonna fix the worn parts and drive it till it drops or blows up.

is the truck in question another 4runner or something different?
 
so what are you trading for ? meaning what are you getting instead.
Is it used, is the undercoating just hiding stuff, would not be the first time someone has hidden rust with undercoat
 
I found a 03 Pathfinder with 139k. Too it to my mechanic and he said it is good. Worth the $$ instead of putting into the Runner.
That’s if they will sell it for what I can afford.
 
Just gonna keep her till she drops dead. She’s running and no issues so might as well keep her and see what I can squeeze out of her.

Surface rust is never pretty, thankfully we don't live under the truck. I have surface rust too, and plan on dealing with it via Needle Scaling/wire brushes, and top coat.. The T4R is well worth keeping. :bluejump:
 
With winter knocking on the door I would remove the running boards and the plastic skid plates right away and get some rust converter. Just scrape off the big flakes and spray it on for now to slow down the rust. Yes you will have to wire wheel it off later but for now it would help.
