Upgrading Suspension Pricing or TRD PRO?

Hey all, need some cost saving brains. I'm deciding whether to buy a TRD PRO 4runner new or keep my 2016 4runner Trail with regular mileage

What would be more economical or make more sense? Just buy the PRO or upgrade my Trail. I'm great at spending money, not so great in crunching numbers. :biggrin2:

I'm want to upgrade my suspension and give it a modest lift and wrap some KO2's on the truck with new TRD wheels. What would the approx cost difference be.

I think it's still reasonable for me to upgrade my truck and eat the 15K miles I have on it?

Unless you are planning to do the work yourself....Just get a trd pro. I mean struts, springs, UACs for starters. May as well wait for the 2019 trd pro. With the foxs. Have a trd ORP I upgraded suspension myself. I know I was going to pay double what I paid in parts for labor had I not done myself

Uh no, do not get a PRO if you are trying to save money. Upgrade your existing 4 and be happy you just saved yourself thousands...and...have better components from the aftermarket. No brainer to keep what you already have here and no numbers to crunch since it's obvious what the cheaper way would be. I mean you save about $7000 buying a Trail versus the Trail with an appearance package (PRO) right off the bat. :drama:

This is absolutely awful advice. You’ll lose money on your trade in. Call it $4k then spend additional 7-10k for a trd pro. You could buy an icon stage 2 w/ spc ucas (a great lift) for $1700. And have it installed for about $800. That’s $2500 for better and more versatile equipment than the trd.

I agree.

I had the same delima when trying to decide whether to buy offroad premium or pro. I ended up getting the offroad premium and then put a full OME suspension with spc uca's AND 285 70 17 KO2s. The lift and tires were less than $3500 installed. If I had a pro, I still couldnt run those tires without adding some sort of lift.

Let me know where you get that work done for 800, I'll take em up on that. I know what I'm about and a pro was never in my radar. People are thinking they want the pro are not going to take much convincing. Don't give them a false sense that they can easily get themselves into a project that involves upkeep.

Upgrade.

Start with your purchase price excluding taxes, fees, and other bs. Add wheels, suspension, tires. Subtract from the MSRP for a PRO. That's how much you'll "save."

But let's be honest, none of us are saving money as we spend more on the ride. Your stock ride probably meets 99.999% of your driving needs. Just like the rest of us.

Even if he was charged $5000 for the labor it would still be cheaper, when all is said and done, than trading for the appearance package.

I don't get what you're saying? "Easily get themselves into a project"? Huh? Buying a lift and paying someone to install it is pretty easy and not much of a project.

How much do you think it costs to install a lift? I did mine in 7 hours and I'm a slow amatuer. Part of that was spent looking at the TV and part was spent drinking beer. Seems like a pro should be able to do it in less.

RSG in Denver quoted me 830$ and I thought hat was high.

I had a similar dilemma, but buying new. Bought a 2018 off road, threw on an icon stage 6, icon wheels, 285 KO2s and the blacked out pro parts. cost about the same as what the pro mark up here in Canada is, but got a much better truck.

It's actually for my wife, so had to get some AMP steps too as it's her DD.

I paid an independent brake and alignment shop $250 to install my Bilstein 5100’s with wheelers Offroad coil springs and that included alignment. Installed my JBA UCA’s myself and did have to pay for another alignment. Had I bought the UCA’s and had them installed with the lift it may have added $100 in labor.

Keep you current Runner and build it.

For a couple / few grand you can have awesome suspension and wheels/tires. If you are set on Pro wheels, get the ones by FN as they are wider and will fit your 285s better.

I wanted a Pro too until I looked into them a bit. I think they are OK if you can get one at MSRP but that is not happening in So Cal and I wont pay $7,000 -$15,000 over for one.

Easy answer was to get the TRD ORP.

Besides, I really like the KDSS.

This thread gave me cancer. Who said trading in on a new vehicle is cheaper then just installing the same sh1t but aftermarket with less cost and more adjustability? I mean unless you're ok with forever having a car payment i suppose? Or those idiots who lease a vehicle, mod it, and then get rid of it when the lease is up? Keep your trail. Get some 6112's and 1.5" rear springs with 5100 shocks. Done.

I don't think you fully understand what an appearance package is.
You may not like the components used by the PRO but different shocks, springs and wider track are not appearance but result in different handling.

One of the many reasons I choose the PRO was because I didn't like the handling of the KDSS equipped OR Premium and for me the Bilsteins provide a better handling on and off-road. This is not appearance like red stitching or a different grille.

I had my OME lift installed at the dealership where I bought it. I’ve had it about a year, lift was installed last week. The parts through the dealer were a little less than most online vendors advertise. The install was right around $800 and included alignment.

I could have probably saved a couple hundred going to a small shop, but the dealer is huge and does a great job standing behind their work. It actually worked out in my favor pretty well because they dropped my bumper and scratched it while they were doing some other upgrades. They had it repainted at no cost to me and fixed a couple of other bumper scratches that were already there.

As far as the original question goes, I’d say mod what you’ve got. You won’t take the hit on the trade, and you get to pick the exact lift you want.

FWIW I've been quoted by a few shops in SoCal to remove my LE's X-REAS & install new suspension for ~$800 (+/- $50). I don't imagine tire install, mounting, and alignment would be much more. Probably would still be cheaper than trading in your current vehicle for a newer one.
