Urban Runner Maestro Full Functionality Install instructions (TPMS!!)

After a few years of having a Pioneer AVH-4200NEX head unit installed with an iDatalink Maestro using the generic Toyota Land Cruiser Firmware (as documented in other threads), I decided to get to the bottom of the install differences once and for all and update the installation in my 2008 Urban Runner.

To do this, I spent the $ on a T01 harness that would get used in any other 4Runner installation and went over it with a multimeter to understand how it is wired. Once I understood the T01 harness, I reflashed my Maestro using the T01 Firmware, updated my wiring and I now have access to TPMS data (pressure and temp!) in my Pioneer head unit.

I have documented all the relevant connections in the charts below. There are a couple of key differences in the OBD-2 interface between the generic Land Cruiser install that iDatalink recommends for Urban Runners and the T01 harness connections:

1. The OBD connection utilizes three wires - CANH, CANL and the K-Line.
2. The OBD circuits connect to different pins on the Maestro when utilizing the T01 firmware. This is why you can't wire it like a Land Cruiser and flash it as a 4Runner!

When you purchase a Maestro RR, you get the black 18-pin connector that would be used for a generic installation that includes the SWI circuits and the OBD circuits. What you do not get is a connector for the GREEN connection on the Maestro RR. This connection is important because you need to connect the Urban Runner's switched +12V input to one of the pins in order for Maestro to know the vehicle is running so that it can begin looking at OBD data. If you don't make this connection, your Steering Wheel Buttons will still work, but OBD Gauge functions will not. Without the mating connector for the GREEN connection, you have to find a single pin connector to use for that accessory switched connection. I had a single wire header connector laying around and was able to use that.

With all of this said, here are the connections to the Urban Runner's Radio Harness. This is a duplicate of information I have previously posted in another Urban Runner install thread:

Here are the connections for the Maestro RR. Note that this diagram is looking at the back of the wire connectors. From the GREEN Connection, you can also make the reverse signal output and E-brake connections if you want.

So, if you wire your 4Runner up to the Maestro using the info in the two images above and Flash your Maestro as a 2003-2009 4Runner utilizing a T01 Harness, you will have the full functionality of your iDatalink Maestro compatible head unit!

So, I just bought a 2008 urban runner and have been going through the forums and a old video of splicing different harness's together. I just want to nail down specifics and seen a lot of info back and forth about this vehicle. I have a Alpine ILX-507 with maestro installed in my 2005 SR5 and it works for everything, but I had to cut out a resistor in the HRTO1 harness to get the TPMS to display.

For the 2008 urban runner, can I order the the normal HRTO1 harness and get everything to work without having to do any splicing? The maestro comes with the cable with the green connector to plug in, which I used on my SR5. Ami missing something there?

Do I need anything else special to get everything to work?

You don’t need anything special but plan on doing lots of splicing. The Urban Runner’s dash harness is unique to that model and there are no quick install harnesses for it. When you remove the factory radio, you’ll need to snip the connectors from the radio that mate to the vehicle side harness and use them to replace the vehicle mating connectors on the T01 harness. It’s not difficult, but it’s not plug and play. The spreadsheets above break it down for you.

You wouldn't happen to have any pics from your work? I kinda get the gist of it from a video on youtube I saw a Provo Beast audio, but they used the PAC module. I took everything apart and saw that the connectors are indeed different so that is frustrating. It would help me if I had an example to look at.

I apparently did not take any pictures that I saved. Sorry! In general, though, you are going to be connecting the ILX harness to the half of the Eclipse harness that connected to the vehicle. You’ll need to run power, both constant and switched to the maestro and make the connections to the OBD port. You’ll run several signals back from the maestro (e-brake, reverse out) to the ILX harness.

Just lay it out wire by wire and you’ll be fine. Also, pick up an OBD interface plug from the jungle website so you don’t have to cut and splice your OBD port.

Hopefully one last question, going to try and tackle this this next week. Did you cut the Green connector and wires off the TO1 harness to get those or did you somehow use the TO1 harness itself? Trying to figure out how you got the green connector and that is the only way i see how to do it. The Maestro RR unit itself does not come with it or the OBD2 plug. I have a spare TO1 harness with the OBD2 and was thinking of taking what i need off of it and splicing the OBD2 to the green connector connections specified in your diagram.
