URGENT HELP. Rear differential

I recently posted a thread about my rear diff leaking a ton of oil. I took the truck to a local shop only to find out that my rear diff is completely trashed apparently. He said he can move it side to side and it's not supposed to move at all.

The truck is a 5spd with rear diff locker. He quoted me a replacement diff with e-locker from a 4runner with 105,000 miles on it, with parts and labor for $960.00. Does this seem reasonable?

yeah that seams fair, if hes including labor. just make sure you get your old diff back too...

That seems like alot to me. Source your own diff and install it yourself. It isn't a very hard replacement.

What is your gear ratio? I have a 4.3 rear diff I would sell you for cheap. It has a diff lock, but a part of the actuator is broken (see my build thread in my sig for some pics). It's rusty on the outside, but pristine on the inside. Should clean up nice though. I planned on cleaning it up and selling it, but I find I don't have time, and it would be better to regain the space in my garage.

Shipping might be a bit of a beast though.

I would snatch up Nelsons and slap it in with your actuator. I'm still questioning whether or not the diff is trashed from what looks like a pinion seal. Is this a reputable shop you've been to before? Are there any vibes, or just oil?

I would have not started a new thread. but that is me. $960 is too much to for a used diff with 100k miles plus install.


$600 for a rebuilt diff (new pinion, ring bearings seal)with a 5 year warranty from ECGS.

Free shipp too. It should cost no more then $100 to have it installed. Might have to shop around for a different mechanic.

Installing a rear diff is incredibly simple. This was one of the first mechanical endeavors I ever pursued, and the hardest part was disconnecting the brake lines for me... That price seems steep, but it's probably right. Crooks I tell ya!

Way too much. You can pick up a complete rear axle hub to hub with elocker around here for around 600 if you watch the classifieds, I can't see it being much different where you're at.

Make sure you bring a case of beer, and you'll probably be able to talk the guy into helping you install it too.

That is way too much money. I had mine replaced with a salvaged part for around 450. That is parts, labor, and everything. The dealer will put a brand new one on for 1200.
