[Urgent, Immediate] 3rd Gear & Transmission advice.

Hello everyone! I wanted to first mention, Thanks for clicking onto my thread, and taking the time to read and assist me.


2001 Toyota 4Runner SR5
115087 miles (Due for Oil Change)

Alright, so I went to work today, about 35.60 miles away(Total of 71.2 miles to and from work). On my way home from work, the problem began after I had stopped at the intersection for the freeway exit. From that point onwards, everytime I hit 3rd gear, my transmission would 'pull' and make a boom sound. It sounds like when your tires run over the yellow/blue reflectors on the road.

The problem is, I have to go to work tomorrow morning at 10AM, and I'm wondering if it is safe to drive that 70-80 miles with my transmission the way it is. I just need to be able to make it to work tomorrow, and come back home safely, so that I can take the car to be checked up on saturday.



(I know some of you might suggest other ways of getting to work, but this is really my only way to get to work. I'd just like the answer to my question, Is it possible to make it, and would it be safe to do so? Also your insight onto what the outcome may be if I pursue driving to work anyways).

That sounds pretty bad. I honestly can't say if it's already doomed or if it could be saved if you don't drive it at this point. It may already need to be rebuilt or replaced but you don't know and my opinion is... taking a chance on destroying a $2 or 3K tranny isn't worth not missing a day of work. Tell em you have the sh!ts and have the truck towed to a shop. That's what I would do.

There's a chance it may just be the driveline siezing up, you could try to grease it and take it on a short test drive to see if it helps.

Crap, this sucks hardcore Hopefully I can get a ride from my friend. Does anyone recommend what I should do? (Drive or don't make the drive).

dont risk making it any worse, call in sick/take the day off or get a ride and have the truck towed to a shop.

You have an 01, are you sure the sound happens in 3rd gear, or when it goes into 4th or overdrive? I ask as it does seem on the 01/02 the overdrive planetary gear can go out and ruin the tranny. You could try to take it for a ride with O/D off, button on the side of the shifter, and see if it still has the problem.

Dont drive...its not worth it.

I agree 100% with pat161...try what he suggested. The first thing that came to my mind was the overdrive planetary gear
