Used Engine

Hey everyone. Sorry for the delayed response (been busy and distracted). Here’s some update…

Had the engine replaced in mid-Feb. The engine came from a ’98 with about 101K mi on it. The engine has been running well though I’ve experienced other little issues since…

> High/random Idling: At times, the engine will idle high during start-up or just sitting momentarily at a traffic light. After research, I believe the cause is an Idle Air Control (IAC) valve that is dirty or going bad. I bought some carburetor cleaner and sprayed it in the throttle body and the hole that goes to the IAC valve. The car drove well for a couple of days with no weird/high-idling, but then it came back. So I’m now thinking that I have to replace the IAC valve completely. Problem is, it’s located under the throttle body, which I think I have to take off to be able to get to the IAC Valve.

> A/C: The A/C hasn’t worked since I had the engine replaced. The fan works and blows air no problem and the green A/C light is on when pressing the A/C button. But the compressor doesn’t kick in, nor is there cold air. I brought the car in for an oil change and the shop had recharged the Freon only for it to leak out very quickly. Didn’t have enough time stay and have them diagnose the leak.

Decisions-Decisions… Recently, my wife and I started thinking about getting a minivan (we have an 18-month old and are planning for another child). We want to keep the 4Runner for its utility, but understand there will be some maintenance work/cost required. We figure getting another SUV would be too costly on the gas for day-to-day driving and that a good used minivan and keeping the 4Runner (for which I’d probably only be able to get about $4K from selling it) would be the better overall use of money.

If keeping the 4Runner, I am wondering if there’s anyone around the Washington, DC/Northern VA/Maryland area that would be interested to help me do some maintenance/make repairs on my 4Runner? This car is sentimental to me (had it since ‘Dec ’96), but I don’t have much car-knowledge, tools (though I would invest in some with suggestions on what to get), or experience to be able to do what I need to. I hoping that there’s someone around that’s interested to get together with me and help me out. I’m not looking for someone to just do the work with me sitting around. I’d like to be able to get in there and learn also, but need someone who has experience to know what to do. Here are some of the things I’m looking to do: replace valve cover gasket, head gasket, spark plugs, A/C diagnostic & repair, tune-up.

Thoughts?

Thanks a bunch,
-Tony
