using low range for an extended time?

22re, 2nd gen, 5speed, stock drivetrain.

question is; For steep gravel switchbacks or extended low speed climbs, do I run any risk leaving it in low range but still running through all the gears? Of course I'm not redlining it or anything but is it bad to just cruise, for example, 30mph in lowrange in 4th gear for an extended amount of time? Or should low range be reserved for the absolute crawl? Like 1st and 2nd only?

I can't find it now, but I feel like there's something in the owners manual for my '85 that says don't take it faster than 25 or 30 mph in low range. Yours is a chain drive case, so that might be slightly different?

Anyway, you'll be fine. If you were going to run low range for hours and hours you might wanna get out and feel the tcase temp every now and again, but there's nothing wrong with leaving it in low and using a higher gear.

Your fine. Just make sure t case has good gear oil in it.

Toyota does say 25 max mph for low range. I know what you mean tho it's a pain switching back and forth

Thanks for the advise... Guess I'll try and keep it under 25mph in situations where conditions provide. In those other situations.... well if I break something I'll have that to report to this post :-/

I don't think I could get to 25mph in low. Well not within a comfortable RPM range. IIRC the chain driven case has a lower ratio for low range. I think it is ~2.68 vs 2.28 of a gear driven case. I never have a need to get out of 3rd when in low though.
I don't see why it wold be an issue as long as you are treating it right.
X2 on making sure you have good gear oil.
