V-6 third- What is different than a stock 85 runner diff?

85runner

New member
I have an 85 4 runner that i'm putting a rear third member in.

1. How do i know if i am buying a stock third member or a v-6 third member? (IE: what do i look for that is different?)

2. Is a v-6 third member much of an upgrade for an 85 4 runner that is mostly street driven with a little off-road playing? Is it worth the extra money, or should i stick with another stock unit?

Thanks!!

Question 1 answer: This link has photos of both diffs. The V6 has more ribs on the outside, has a beefier housing, and stronger internals. Either will fit in your axle (as long as it isn't an elocker differential; which will also fit but not without modification to the axle).

Question 2 answer: No, it's not worth any extra money for what you are using your 4Runner for.
