Valve Lifter Numbers

Hello All - Have been an avid reader of this forum for quite a while, but haven't been much of a poster. I've got a 05 V6 w/the dreaded "Misfire on 6 CYL" head gasket issue.
Well we are to the point where the heads are back on after being machined. We are ready to install the valve lifters and cams. Only problem is that we have the order of the valve lifters out of whack.
What is the solution? Do they come from the factory with a set order? If so, can anyone provide any insight? Trying to avoid having to measure.

What do you mean you have the valve lifters out of whack?

Are you talking about the shims that go onto the buckets?

I meant that we kept them in order when we removed them, but got mixed up out of order and now don't know exactly what number corresponds with where we removed it. The silver caps that have the numbers underneath. I guess you could call them a shim, but I think Toyota calls them valve lifters.

Can you post a picture? I think we're talking about the same things. If that's the case, it's going to be a pain as you need to basically perform a valve adjustment without knowing what the original specs were.

We are definitely talking about the same thing. That was my fear was that an adjustment would be needed. Do they come with specific numbered ones in specific positions from the factory?

Im going to go with ....no. They dont go in specific locations. Each valve is measured then the needed shim is installed. If you had the valve seats ground then the shims would not match up anyway. You will need to measure the gap then install the matching shim per TOYOTA specs.

Darn. The only work on the head that was done was shaving it to level. I wonder if there is a VIN lookup to possibly see the order from the factory. Thanks for the help

There isn't an order from the factory if I remember right and depending on how many miles you have on the engine the shims won't be the same thickness as their stamped numbers indicate. You're gonna have to measure each shim, mark them and start swapping them around until you get the right clearances between the valve stem and shim face using a feeler gauge.

Chances are you will find that a couple need to be replaced, in which case I believe there's a chart in the FSM or that a parts department can get you to find out which shim should be what thickness.
