Very bad vibration while driving

My '92 Runner has a tendency to vibrate pretty bad while driving. It used to only be from 55-65mph, now it starts around 30-35. I'm puzzled, at first I thought maybe U-Joints, but I've replaced both and it still does it. Maybe I hit something in the trails and knocked the drive shaft out of balance? Anyone have this issues before or know what could be causing this? I just rotated and balanced all the tires recently and just replaced my wheel bearings (outer only though). Thoughts?

Put the back end on jack stands and rotate the drive shaft. You can buy a modestly priced dial indicator and magnetic base from various tool supply places including Harbor Freight or Production Tool Supply. Or you can use a bent coat hanger and vice grips. Rotate the drive shaft to see if its running out.
You can hook your kid's Gopro camera under there and shoot a video while you drive and see what shows up.

My experience has been many tire shops perform a static balance; that's, tire is not balance while on the vehicle. Although, one would think the shop would have checked front suspension to determine if there were any issues?? Had new tires installed fairly recently and later developed vibration as you described on 90 T4r, raise the front end and took each wheel and check for any movement from side to side and up/down, problem became obvious, idler arm was shot!! Anyhow, would not cost anything to raise and check??

I would suspect a bad balance job.

Well, it may be my tie rod ends, I just replaced them and need to get it aligned, but I've replaced my idler arm and one of the ball joints (others aren't bad but I'll double check). As of the static balance, I know exactly what you're talking about, I work in a tire shop and I'm actually the one who balanced them. I can just take it to work and rebalance, wouldn't hurt

that wont cause a vibration, especially one related to speed.
 
Did you balance the driveshaft after the new u joints? Did the truck have the vibration before and after the u joint replacement?

I did not have the drive shaft balanced, and yes it vibrated before and still does. However I just balanced my tires at work and every single one was off (some were .50 ounces and some were as bad as 1.75 ounces) so I'll see if that fixed it on my way home

you bring up a lot of point so this may ramble. First of all if you experience bad vibrations while driving , try listening to Pet Sounds. Its not everyones cuppa but even though the punchline song didnt make it on that album, it might get the led out.

agree speed related issue not likely tie rods, etc. But you can always have someone rock the steering wheel while you finger each pivot, feeling for movement between components. Is everything tight ?

I like the off-axis drive shaft. Never thought of doing the dial indicator thing, but it almost seems like it should be std procedure after serious drive line surgery.

YOU work in the damn tire shop, not me. Is 1/2 oz "a whole lot" of off balance? 2 oz sounds like a buzzy amount but not wanting to do the math. Did you use stick ons ( aka fly offs) or hammer ons (aka hammer ons)?

You really want to know if its a drive shaft out of balance ? Doubtful its real ( without the off-axis contributions from u-joint mislocation) at modest speeds, but band clamp some tire weights to the shaft to create an intentionally out of balance shaft, Drive a short piece to see if & what you feel.
Don't do this next to me in case the band slips and you frag your neighbor; I return fire without thinking sometimes.

I also like the out-of-round tire notion, finally goes harmonic on the suspension then you, at some speed ( or frequency)


THe out of round idea brings up; I have a 944 once had tires were visibly out of round but too much tread to junk. I think I wore flats on the tire maybe from side slides, there's a true 20 dogleg into a hard stop near here that thing would hold on at 60 if it was nice and warm, but just barely. I actually thought I could feel the burning tire vapor give up some sideways G's just before the screeching halt. Its country. relax.

Anyway found an old tire guy pulled out this awesome Tire Truing machine from his lot junk pile.
Siad it was his bread and butter in the bias ply era.

A spindle to center up the wheel and rotate the tire slowly, then a little 1/2 horse motor spinning a small circular blade, moving on a track not unlike a super simple lathe carriage. He skimmed back and forth machining little corkscrews of rubber off the high spots of tire until true round, it cost a couple 32s of tread but the car was slinky smooth way up over 1C after his fix.

I wonder if more tires dont need tuning like that.

Hell I think aussie locker says tires per axle must be w/in 3/8" circumference match or the locker will have problems.
They said get tire shop to agree to that circumference spec before mounting". I thought a tire shop would point me across the street to the other shop if I demanded that.

I used to be a tire guy with fair amount of experience (9yrs)
1) almost guarantee that the tires are out of round slightly,out of balance, or choppy
2) 1/2 oz is usually acceptable but sometimes depending on rims,tire, and vehicle 1/2 oz wouldn't cut it (2 oz is not acceptable on any vehicle)
3) the machine used to balance prob needs to be calibrated CORRECTLY
4) static balance does not mean its balanced on the vehicle....there are two primary types of balancing, one is static( weight is placed on one side of the wheel or in the middle) static balancing is usually reserved for lazy people or tires that require a lot of weight. The other type is dynamic ( weight placed on both sides of wheel)

Most shops check play in steering components when the vehicle is in the air. They should also check the brakes...why? Because thats how they make money.
If they didn't its because they got busy and forgot or they are lazy

Ok, I can not hardly understand anything you're saying. I'm not sure if you're being a smartass or being helpful, but in case you are being a smartass, yes I may be 18 years old but I just so happen to be a licensed aircraft mechanic. I'm not stupid. And for everyone else, I took the truck into work and every tire WAS off balance, some only .5 ounces and some were as bad as 1.75 oz. Got rid of a lot of the vibration, but it still has a tiny tiny bit, but nothing I'm going to complain about. But if someone has experienced this and knows what is causing it im stick looking for solutions

Tires are in balance; I would be looking at the drive shaft. take it to a drive line specialist shop and get it balanced. New ujoints may have alittle weight to offset. Just the nature of the beast.

fwiw, I was noting / complimenting your screen name but I don't usually do the hold-your-hand-and-stroke-the-back-of-it method. Where would even get the notion that I was dissing led zep, pink floyd or 18years old ? All those things have been very useful to me. If it will set us back arights, here goes "you are certainly a fine young man with notable interests and many great accomplishments. But Hell no you cant date my daughter."

And I enjoyed writing my little screed ; the pay for posting here is too low to bother polish it, but if you read a paragraph at a time, and don't mind jumpy subject matter, maybe theres something there. maybe not.

The only subtle thing I think was to bring up the tire truing machine, seems like there is more need for that kind of service , especially with big fat tires subjected to much abuse. It fixed $800 of bad tire on one of my other rides.

As far as vibration sources, out-of-round should be as bad as out-of-balance, even if the balance job hides that. Out of round would be one source of out-of-balance, Think about it.
You can weight the tire to disguise the balance issue, but that does not fix the round issue.
Now whether a roundness issue can overcome suspension dampening to the point you can feel it, how bad and at what speed, thats a whole nuther can of worms.

I noted that I've never put a dial indicator on a drive shaft after work like u joint replacement but it sounded like a great idea. Thinking out loud. I suggested a way to mimic drive line balance issues would be to CAUSE out of balance (band clamp some weights on the shaft and go for a drive) just to see what it feels like. I bet I would feel it in my seat or feet but not the steering wheel.

SO is it tires or driveline ? one clue is the frequency; the shaft turns about 3~4 times faster than the road wheels, so if you have a feel for the frequency of the vibration , that could be useful info. Any body paying homage to Pink & Zep should have a good feel for frequencies. BUt to make things worse, a couple tires out of balance could produce a beat higher than a single tires rotational frequency, but that would come and go as the culprit tires move in and out of synch with e/other.

and lastly - Pet Sounds is a landmark Beachboys album, and not a poof piece by any means . Good Vibrations was a track produced during those sessions but not included on that album, totally ruining a lame joke 50 years later. ah the www we weave ...

Well firstly, you're the only person that knew what my name actually stands for. Secondly, 1/2 oz is not a big deal, it may cause a tiny bit of vibration but more than likely nothing you'll notice, especially if the tire is on the rear. And I can deal with helpful smartass, I didnt mean to come across as a d!ck. as for the frequency thing, there's no way to tell. After rebalance the vibration has decreased a great amount but still vibrates from about 35-45ish, but not too much. I'll try the dial indicator, just gotta find time
