Vinyl Wrapped the Roof

This past weekend I removed the K9 rack and wrapped the roof with a black matte 3M wrap. It didn't turn out perfect, but with the full roof rack and the upcoming 3" lift, I decided to leave it until it starts to fail. The largest amount of work was in the prep.

That's a smart move. With the rack and the eventual lift, doing a proper cleaning of the roof will be a bear.

I've been on the fence about whether to do this on my own rig before installing my full rack. Any issues you'd care to share... what went right/wrong... stuff like that?

Make sure to take the time cleaning. Clay bar the top as well. Also, you will want to remove any wax and wipe it with isopropyl alcohol.

As far as laying down the wrap, watch CK Wraps vídeos on YouTube. He does a great job of instructing.

Be careful pulling the backing off so that the wrap doesn’t wrinkle.

I was afraid to really stretch the wrap. That was my mistake. Had I stretched it better, I wouldn’t have had the 4 or 5 wrinkles show up. Also, pick one side and work evenly to the back.

All in all it wasn’t too bad. I can’t remember the post I saw on here, but some other guy had it done and I thought it was a good idea. It is next to impossible to really care for that paint with the rack on.

Curious how much the supplies cost you. I have plans to have my local tint guy wrap it in clear vinyl (don't want the extra heat with black) but if your was is cheaper, I may consider it.

I purchased from rvinyl. I bought the 3M wrap, the 3 cleaners, and the squeegee for $170 shipped.

Then my time to do the work, but I enjoy that stuff.

Nice! I've wrapped a lot on my own but hadn't thought about eh roof yet. I do like the idea of going clear though so not to draw more heat in. The roof overall should be fairly easy as it is flat but a few wrinkles or bubbles isn't a big deal since you wont see it anyways.
What size vinyl wrap did you get? One big piece or did you have 2 big pieces? I know Vvivid sells a 6'x5' for the hood. so maybe two of those?

I purchased at 60" x 108" piece to cover the whole top.

With regards to color/heat, you are correct, the darker color will allow for additional heat. If you already have a dark vehicle (blacked out), then I don't think it will make a difference.

The full rack I have results in 1/2 the roof being under rows of shade too, so that helps, I suspect.

Did that width of vinyl give you enough to wrap the sides at all like a FJ?
