At highway speeds (or slightly above) the 3rz paired with a W59 transmission is screaming at ~3000 rpm which is only 2500 rpm below the 5500 redline. I find the engine noise fatiguing on long trips.
I read that the similar W58 transmission has a higher 5th gear ratio of 0.783:1, while the W59 has 0.85:1 (or is it 0.81:1?). The 4th gear ratios are the same between the two transmissions at 1:1, so hopefully no other gears would have to be changed.
I like the low gear ratio that the W59 has in first gear for off road, but I would prefer the 5th gear out of the W58. This 5th gear out of a W58 would theoretically drop the RPM at highway speeds, improve fuel economy (probably imperceptible), and hopefully make highway driving more bearable.
Is it possible to fit the 5th gear from a W58 into my W59?
Anyone done it?
Would this require me to change out other things?
