Ok guys, I'm getting tired of seeing the same guys selling 22 ammo online and at the gun shows for 50-100$ a damn box. They are hurting the shooting industry and us shooters with their price gouging. I understand this is a Capitalist country, and they are free to make money as they please. The problem is, it has been over a year now and things are still not any better. The same people are still buying everything up and reselling it for huge profit.
Here in San Antonio, the same guy, his family, and a car load of his friends are showing up at walmart exactly as the truck is being unloaded, and buying the stores out. He goes store-to-store and cleans out all of them daily, then resells it on gunbroker, armslist, etc. for 300-400% profit. The stores know he is doing it, but can't refuse to sell to him. He always knows exactly what they are getting in, and when; sometimes before the truck even gets unloaded! How does he know this? I'm gonna tell you:

The website is a little quirky, but it works. I have found the best thing to do is search the store number for your local store, and enter it into the search field. Don't use the search criteria listed on the side if you can avoid it. Just entering the local store number will list all available ammo in the store, and you will have to scroll thru it, but it seems to work better.
This website will let you track ammo shipments for every Walmart in the country, in almost real time. (It has been a hugely hush-hush thing for awhile now with the price gougers) After you start using it, you will start to see a pattern in what is delivered to your local store, and when. The more people we can get this info out to, the more chances we have of getting the ammo before the price-gougers do. As long as they keep buying it all up, and stupid people keep paying their astronomical prices for it, they will continue to do it.
Ammo companies are producing 22lr at a higher rate than they ever have before. There is no conspiracy going on.There are many factors that have affected the ammo shortage:
- More people have been buying guns that shoot it, (especially first time gun buyers).
- The popularity of AR style 22 rifles and AR conversion kits - these rifles come with 30 rnd mags and are very easy to shoot a 550rd box with out even realizing it. My wife is a pro at it! lol
- 22 conversion kits for pretty much every popular handgun
- The "Prepping" community has grown like wildfire as of late. People have started to realize how useful the caliber is, and how easy it is to stockpile/carry large amounts of it.
- Hoarders. These people have (or had) shitloads of ammo already, but buy it every time they see it to build/rebuild their stockpile. I guess I kinda fall into this category. For years, the wife an I bought a 550rd box or two every 2 weeks when we went grocery shopping. I did this more as a price thing. I watched the Federal Bulk Packs go from 8$ a box in the 90s to 18$ a box 2 years ago. So, I bought it both as a hedge against inflation, and because I trained a lot with it. I shot around 2k rounds a month, every month. I also volunteered with the Boy Scouts to teach shooting, and used my personal ammo for this. This has protected me from the shortage for pretty much all of the last year. I had 6-8 bulk packs in my safe and havent been buying any because of availability. I now have just a few left, and need to buy more to be able to shoot/teach at my previous levels.
- and last but definitely not least, is the price gougers. They are individuals and local gun store owners who are either buying up all the local supply, or ordering directly from the manufacturer and reselling it for several times what they bought it for. If you take a look at Gunbroker, Armslist, or any other popular online guns site, you will see 22lr ammo everywhere. The small, local gun stores use this as a way to sell the ammo for high prices, because the don't want to face the wrath of pissed off gun buyers seeing them do it in their stores. Gun Shows are also a popular outlet for them. STOP BUYING FROM THESE PEOPLE!!! They will continue to do this as long as you keep buying it at their prices!! Even if it means you have to go completely without ammo for a week or two, don't pay their prices!
