water pump 'sweating' ?

hey all,
just had my 4R('08 V6 engine 85K) in at my local toyota/lexus specialist and he said the water pump was, in mechanic terms, 'sweating'. He said it wouldn't be a problem to wait and do it in 6 mos-1yr, but that i should definitely replace it in that timeframe.

also, said he would do a coolant flush too b/c the coolant has to be drained anyways (?) when doing the water pump. with parts and labor he quoted me ~$900 to include the water pump replacement, another part or two accessible once the pump is removed (not sure what..pls advise; and it wasn't the timing belt), and the coolant flush.

i have read other threads on the 4th gen water pump replacement costs and the price quoted me seems a little high

im not a mechanic, does this sound right to any mechanics out there?

I took my v6 in for service at a dealer at 100k. They told me there was residue behind the water pump indicating it was slowly leaking. The price they quoted me was silly high. I think like $1200. I talked to the service manager. He told me the water pump OEM from Toyota was around $260. I got him down to $900 to replace the water pump service the coolant system(flush). He also replaced the seal to the water pump and the thermostat. (May have been the other two parts behind the water pump you were referring to). While yes this was pricey I was in a bind to get it done as I was leaving for a trip in two days and wasn’t going to have time to mess with it. Good luck!

If you have the time and do some research a garage may charge you around 600-700 for the same service. Aftermark parts will be cheaper.

Dang. That sounds a little steep for a water pump replacement. Then again, I do my own maintenance so anything seems steep. Its not something I WOULDNT keep an eye on until it gets repaired though. The aluminum block and cylinder heads do not take kindly to being ran hot...

Just had the timing belt/water pump/idlers replaced on our 2005 V8. Cost me $370 labor plus parts. I bought the parts as a kit for $140 delivered.

$900 sounds like the standard rate for supplying and replacing the waterpump on a 1GR V6. You can probably shop around and have a 3rd party do it for less money, just make sure it's a reputable shop. A lot of times, a dealer service department will give you a bit of a break on pricing if you're an existing customer of theirs.
